X-trainer/Bike for home: recomendations?

Postby Mike on Sat Nov 29, 2008 9:08 pm

Orite....basically....just doing some cardio on my x-trainer watching England V NZL highlights.....and you wouldnt beleive...but one of the steel bits that supports your weight has just effing snapped in half!!!!!!!! Now i'm the lightest I've been in a while...so a bit miffed. this thing is about 2 months old as well...

So anyway does anyone have any recomedations for some decent home cardio equipment? dont want to spend a fortune and it has to be foldable......and sturdy!

Thanks

Is it not covered by warranty?

Personally if you are looking at a bike I'd get a turbo trainer and stick your racer in it as that would be much better.

the bikes they sell are meant to hang clothes on nothing else- new year resolutions that dont happen

if you are going to purchase a bike- get it from costco or makro- if it goes tits up, no quibbling- money back straight away, plus with vat going down they will be a few quid cheaper now.

since you got your student lan and you will be putting 3 yrs in mike, why not spend a bit more on something that will last? google x-bike, more of a real feel as the handlebars move and stuff- about £600-£700, or as GB said, get a cheap iron horse and get a turbotrainer- get a tacx one that hook up to a pc and do some vuelta, or tour de france stages.

As I said in Scott's thread, I wouldn't trust the cheap Argos bikes. Housemate got one recently, and it's not very sturdy, and generally quite shit.

You could try the 2nd hand ads, can get some real bargains there. Especially if you can wait a couple of months until the new-year resolutions have failed. :D

How much would you's say you have to pay for a half decent x-trainer for a small spare room of the house? I would like something but dont really want to spend a lot being a tight arse Jock

I think its slightly different if you have different people using the same equipment like 50-100 times per day, than say, one person using it for 1 hour per day...maybe 2 at a push.

The equipment I looked at in JJB was down in price, originally marked up at £200, and was Olympus not JJB or Argos branded. As long as it can support my weight I'm happy. Paying £600 for a peice of cardio equipment for the hosue is ridiculous, unless your an elite athlete with loads of spare room (and money!)

Of course I coudl just go running....but...its too damn cold for that nonesense!

I dont think you can put a figure on it and say 'if you paid that much it'll be good'.....you could go out and buy a v-fit xtrainer for £300.....quite some money. would it be any good? probably not. You could spend £500 on a rebook one.....might be orite, but not really hard wearing. I'd say just try and use the equipment first to see if its sturdy and well built. then look at the features. then see how practical it is - some of these xtrainers are ridiculous in size and would take up a whole room.

look around, try them out if poss. The one I bought I didnt try it. I got it from a mate for next to nothing and it broke. Not bothered really just more pissed I cant get my morning cardio in for 2 days now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok £600 may be a tad excessive- but since you are away for 3 yrs at uni-equates to 200 a year, or 4 a week
how much do you pay for your gym a week?

with the credit crunch afoot, there will be a lot of the smaller privately owned gyms going to the wall me thinks,so keep an eye on the papers for bankruptcy sales etc- you may be able to pick up an "industrial use" bike quite cheap

I dont think many bikes you get in a gym are foldable and Mike said he need the equipment to fold.
I must admit going out to wander the street for cardio when it's dark, cold and wet in no fun at all. IF Mike find something in the 150 quid ball park that is foldable i will be getting one as well

Ok well here is the bike I bought...

and folded:

Its very sturdy and best of all is silent! The xtrainer tended to be quit clunky and noisy. Cost me £80 :)
