Which supps will help my knee out?

Postby Spit on Mon Sep 22, 2008 12:21 pm

Just got back from seeing the physio as my knee hasn't been improving as I'd expected- she has extended the diagnosis to an MCL sprain, infrapatellar fat pad inflammation and a possible stress fracture to the joint itself- good value for money eh!

Anyhow, I've been caning the fish oil since the injury occurred and to be honest inflammation has been minimal anyway, there's really no visual difference between the (injured) left knee and the right. What else should I be taking? With this stress fracture in mind I'm wondering if Cissus would be a good bet, or is there a better alternative? All suggestions gratefully received, although I am pretty skint at the mo so may have to pick and choose a bit.

cissus and msm [latter may or may not help depending on how close they are on being right to whats wrong]

i would also massage the area at least twice a day or bath it in hot water - followed by extreme cold - [shower] what you need is to get as much blood in the area going as possible and also massaging it - [but this also depends how deep the issue is]

Cheers boys. KP, what dosage/protocol would you recommend for the Cissus?

Also, I know the fat pad has a poor blood supply which may mean it's the slowest healing bit of the lot. Will the cissus help improve bloodflow, or should I be considering a different supp for that? Will defo keep on top of the old hot & cold treatment as you both suggest.

I think a very very high dosage of cissus, msm, fish oil, vit c and maybe some gluscosamine may make a small difference in the short term but i dont think a whole lot for the amount of damage you have. Looks liek allot of physio will be our best investment. See how long it will take on the NHS maybe???....probably be in a wheelchair before you get seen to

Nah, it's not quite as doom & gloom as all that thankfully- she reckons 6 weeks total recovery which is a shitter but at least I know what to expect now, the intial prognosis was for more like a fortnight which was why I got concerned that I wasn't seeing more progress.

Physio-wise there's nowt they can do, it's just a case of letting it heal- there's no muscle damage, just ligament/fat/bone. She was in no doubt that I'd make a full recovery in due course, which was reassuring. I do have a set of really pansy exercises to do in order to keep the VMO fit and healthy, I'm almost at a double-BW deadlift now but I think that's going to have to wait a while!

The moral of the story- NEVER GO RUNNING. Leave it to Kenyans and shoplifters.

When I had big joint and tendon problems I mega-dosed this lot...

Glucosamine/MSM/Chondroitin
Vitamins C & E,
Fish Oils,
Cissus.

Sorted me right out :)

Cool, sounds like I'm on the right track overall.

What do we reckon for Cissus dosage then boys & girls? I'm happy to ramp it up but would rather avoid it interfering with my sleep if possible (though that may be more of a question of timing the dose right). I weigh 72kg if that makes any difference.
