Whey protein- how long should it be stable in water?

Postby upright on Thu Jul 31, 2008 7:10 pm

I mix a shake for work at around 9pm, sometimes I'll have a MRP Shake from All in One instead. I generally have this stored in my locker until 4.10am. I haven't noticed anything bad, sometimes the MRP settles at the bottom a litle which is resolved with anothr quick shake...

Any opinions on this? Main concern is the enduring quality of the protein.

hmmm. Have asked this before on MP, I think I remember the answers weren't too definitive. So googled it again, I reckon I'm gonna just mix it at work fom now on. Bit of a pain taking a botle of water in every night as well, but don't fancy strolling into the office and draining the water cooler into the mixer - funny looks and silly comments don't bother embarrass me but they do get trying after a while. And with all the talk of people on gear at work at the moment i'd prefer to dodge the limelight.

I make 4 up at a time for convienience and on occasion my brain has switched off and ive added water to 2 without thinking, usually late at night when im on auto pilot.

Ive put the 2nd in the fridge and notice no obvious differences 9 hours later in the morning, thats not to say that something hasnt broken down but theres no discernable physical changes.

Is there anything stopping you adding the liquid later btw? (edit, ignore that bit, just read your 2nd post)

I dont have any "proof" but a lot of branded protein powders say drink within 20-30 mins of mixing.

I've never had any problems either, it just popped in up there. I think, rather than think about it I'm gonna invest in a big rucksack and ditch the asda bags. A big 60l hiking job should do it for the amount of food and sh;t I take to work these days.

I've left them over a day before and not have any issues.

I think it's more problematic if you use milk instead of water.

Yeah, I don't think I'd leave milk in my locker, although a colleague who competes in strongman does, 4 pints of shake in milk bottle. He has it with butties etc. throughout the night. I don't know anyone who lifts as much but pays so litttle interest in the sciences of diet etc...

I have an airtight container with the powder in and just put what I want in and glass of water as and when.
