What car?

Postby roadz on Thu Mar 03, 2011 9:21 pm

So after my recent accident, it turns out my car is a write off and I've been offered £2,980 for it. To say I'm pleased is an understatement. It's an 03 plate Fiesta and was due an MOT a few days after the accident and a service, so I've saved a bit of money there. I was also planning on selling the car soon anyway, and I would've been happy with £2,000 for it, so it all seems to have worked out well.

Anyway, I need a new car and have a budget of £8k. I'm only 21 so can't get anything too flashy/fast. I want something with a noce solid, well built feel to it and a nice interior. Auto would be preferred, as I sit in a fair bit of (London) traffic.

The leading contenders are the Audi A3 and the Mercedes C-Class coupe at the moment, but I'm open to ideas. What would you go for out of the A3 and C-Class, and which engine/trim? Any other suggerstions?

P.S. I have plenty of time to look as the other guys insurance company are known to be slow and my people reckon it'll be at least another 4 weeks until I get my cheque. Until then I'm driving a 207 around - it's okay because it's practically new but I don't know who would go and spend THEIR OWN money on a car like that!

As far as I'm aware, the Golf and A3 use the same engines, etc... So do you think it's worth paying more for the Audi over the Golf?

No, Audi's are driven by dicks and you'll never get let out of a side turning

Underrated car on the whole.

I couldn't live with myself if I drive something German as I'd be mugged.

For pure value for money then Alfa would be the choice but most people are a little scared of owning one.

I think I'm a bit of a badge snob when it comes to cars tbh. I've looked at Alfas and must say they are beautiful, but as you said, I'm a bit scared of owning one due to the reputation for being unreliable.

They're pretty good now to be fair as the current top man was the head of BMW MSport so you know reliability will be right up there.

Must say that apart from my Subaru and Porsche's, all my Alfa's have been the most reliable cars I've owned.

The engines in citroen vtr's are defo under rated. Solid and reliable engines.

Im looking to get shot of my car and buy something more economical. Want a diesel i can get over 60 mpg on average with. Fuel is just gonna keep going up an up and i recon if i do the sums it will be cheaper for me to change now before my car needs any major work done (money spent) and its still worth something. Id be taking out another car loan but soending less and less on fuel in comparison

My Dad currently runs a C5 with the VTR Diesel engine and averages 50mpg-55mpg which isn't a bad return for the rural roads of North Devon and given the C5 isn't a small car.

£2 a litre for 2% of crude production compromised is a joke. It's just the greedy speculators yet again deciding that barrel prices need to go up in case unrest spreads East. Well here's a suggestion - wait and what happens first and do the global economy a favour before it bites you back in the arse when one will be able to afford to buy any crude related goods.

i cant see the unrest getting better now that Gaddaffi has responded - Oil is going to be interesting to watch this week.

If USA and UK put in the no fly zone AND go in - i think we can pretty much see Oil go to its highest and all recovery globally in deep shite. As the impact will be global to every nation - I would suspect that every channel will be explored to sort this out very quickly.

what a mess.

Love Labour now not saying a word! as it was them that welcome Libya back and released Megrahi.
