Too close to get a record?

Postby Matt on Mon Sep 15, 2008 11:31 pm

I did a comp on sunday as some of you know and I injured my back on my last attempt on the squat (147.5) I got it up but wobbled forward having to put a foot out meaning I didn't get it.

Compared to then it is alot lot better but still hurts a bit in certain positions/movements.

My last chance to break the BPC 75kg 16-17 Squat and Bench Press British Records is on the 4th October, now I really really really want to break those record, I would be happy if I just managed to get the bench one.

I was able to get a 110kg legal bench with my back in a worsen condition, I could get 112.5 if I started training smartly up to it.

Do you guys think I would still be able to get squat record though? my legal squat I got at the comp was 142.5.

Also, what exercises could I do to help with it? if I can do any at all, I was going to do reverse hyper's.
If you're not sure if you're getting quality sleep or not, this is your standard: You should always wake up under a teepee. If you don't have a boner so solid you have to do a handstand to take a morning piss, your Testosterone levels are probably low.

Work on your god damn squat form!!!!!!

Do all 3 lifts but just do token lifts for squat and deadlift, and go big on the bench, that way you get the bench record.

Sorry to sound negative, but I wouldn't bother, it won't be a real all time british record and even alot of the all time british records in teens aren't really the real deal.

I would personally rest yourself and just focus on long term goals of hitting junior records and more importantly senior records.

how many 17 year olds can say they have a british record? ..especially when I start doing my YMCA lvl 2 and 3 where you actually have to GET clients :) plus I plan to try and start a powerlifting team at college and peopel would be more intent on listening to me if I say I have a record ehh :)

MJ, both Curt and Ash have made good points.
  • Go to see a doc or physio or someone qualififed who can look at your injury, do NOT ignore it and end up damaging yourself further
  • Rest until you have seen said doc/physio
  • Work on your squat form

You are pulling good lifts and seem to be improving nicely, but the last thing you need to do is injure yourself badly by going for a record when you are not 100% atm. Trust me on this one, if you had to take a year out from lifting to rehab it would be horrible.

I'm very impressed with all your lifts mate, but for the love of god DON'T screw your back totally trying to chase a record. If you don't get it checked out you might totally wreck your back and ruin any chance of lifting heavy again for the rest of your life.

As much pride there is doing records it is NOT worth risking life and limbs for at 17!

Sorry MJ, but you asked for opinions so I gave you mine!

I will put it even more blunt to you (you don't have to take my advice!)... Most 16-17 years have never competed in powerlifting in UK and even moreso in the bpc (have you ever seen a 17 year lifter in bpc fullstop to be honest lol), therefore the records in the category don't really mean anything.
So basically what i'm trying to say is, why are you going to risk your back over a record that most likely isn't even a record? People would be suspicious if you are beating so called equipped records RAW surely?!

^^ I say go for it!!! Then we can both beat records while Ash watches :D Ash has a point a very valid one but if you want the records go for it!

Worst case scenario: you don't get the record cos you feck your back up even more and can never compete again.

Sure, that is very pessimistic, but to me it appears you have increased the chances of doing that with your injury at the moment.

Your 17 and have many years in you. Perhaps you should continue to train and if you feel ok then make a decision nearer the time.

A very bullish but noble attitude to have, people wouldnt break records if they didnt really work for it.
However, MJ is very young, he needs to weigh up the potential damage to having a british record.

I already posted this because MJ asked on BB.com (apparently he thought they talk about powerlifting in the powerlifting section... silly). But since the bench and squat records are up for grabs, why not just go for the bench record and do token lifts in the squat and deadlift? That way you don't do anything that will hurt your back and you still get a record. Best of both worlds. You might look a bit silly I suppose...
