1. Cattle meat is packed with protein and potassium. Four ounces of lean meat yield about 22 grams of first class protein. Most athletes lack potassium in their diets. Low levels can inhibit muscle growth as well as the production of growth hormone and IGF-1. These two hormones stimulate muscle growth.
2. Beef is great for strength and size as it has more creatine than any other food. Creatine plays a vital role in supplying muscleswith adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is a muscle's fuel source for the first 10-15 seconds of training. Creatine also lets you train harder and longer by replenishing ATP.
3. Steak contains vitamin B6. The higher your protein requirements the more B6 you should add to your diet. There's enough vitamin B6 in red meat to boost your immune system. This helps improve your recovery from workouts, while promoting muscle growth.
4. This delicious meat also contains vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is essential for the production of red blood cells. Red blood cells deliver oxygen to your muscles.
5. A good steak contains iron. Iron is a blood building mineral. In contrast, chicken, fish and turkey all contain fairly low amounts of iron.
6. Beef is a low-fat source of CLA. Certain cuts are very low in fat. Eye of round steak is not that much more fatty than chicken. CLA or conjugated linoleic acid is a potent antioxidant that combats tissue damage from hardcore workouts. CLA also preserves muscle by acting as anticatabolic (anti-muscle wasting).
7. My favourite red meat also contains zinc and magnesium. Zinc is known as the anabolic mineral. It contributes to building protein into muscles. As with glutamine and B6, it reinforces the immune system. Magnesium supports muscle growth and enhances strength. It also improves the efficiency of insulin production - the body's most anabolic hormone.
8. Beef contains alanine. Alanine is an amino acid that makes sugar from the protein you eat. If you're on a low carb diet, alanine comes to the rescue by providing your muscles with energy. The beauty of alanine is that it spares existing muscle tissue from providing fuel.
9. Chicken and fish are extremely low in carnitine. Cattle meat, on the other hand is packed with the stuff. Carnitine is a great fat burner.
10. Beef offers variety. Chicken becomes pretty boring when eaten day in and day out. All the different cuts of steak vary in flavour and texture, making this meat a great boredom buster.
