Supps for pregnancy & young children

Postby Dtlv74 on Thu Aug 20, 2009 4:31 pm

My sister is four months pregnant with her first child! Am aware that nutrition is of vital importance to child development and also the mums health while preggers but it's not a topic i know much about.

Any suggestions or info for things she can take that will make a positive difference? Any probs with fish oils/omega 3?

I know there are a few parents on here so info/experience much appreciated :D

don't know piss all about this kind of thing, but what I would say is be careful to make sure the fish oil you recieve has extremely low levels of mercury.

Well, seems as good a time as any to say that my wife is nearly 4 months pregnant.

I made sure she took a good quality Folic Acid supp before conceiving and she continues to take it.

I've got her a specific pregnancy multi: Nutri one called OptiNatal (a good amount of iron in it too).

Fish Oils are a must. Absolute must. Babies brains need the DHA. I only use Aliment.

She doesn't like taking Greens as a drink, but MegaGreens also come in caps so she takes 6 a day.

Vit D, zinc & magnesium are also taken.

1-2 evening primrose oil for the GLA.

Phophatidyl Choline is also very good but I've currently run out.

That's it lol

Basics imo are: omega-3s, good appropriate multi, folic acid pre (and continue during if you like). The rest I still think are important but realise that some people don't like taking too many pills... let alone when they're pregnant.

Vit D during pregnancy and early childhood decreases the chances of food intollerances, notablbly celiac.

I'm sure the NHS discourages supplementing Fish Oils during pregnancy, probably due to heavy metals.

That's why you go get the best stuff.

Omega-3s are too important not to take.

Certainly better than most choices. Plus the mother-to-be will feel happier it's "passed" for pregnancy. I personally would use other supps, but that's me.

Yeah, whereas you or I might think nothing of swalling a load of supps it's something most people dont like to do... i probably woulndt be able to get her to stick to taking more than a couple of things... although she is keen to do things properly.

Will probably look at the Aliment fish oils.

Anyone know how BSD fish oils are for quality/ heavy metals?

If my GF saw my supps, she'd go nuts and claim I was on steroids... Heh.

Thought about algae based omega 3 oils? Guaranteed not to have the mercury/other heavy metals in them.

There are plenty of people out there who think protein drinks=steroids. i had an argument with some chav girl in a pub about a year ago about it... and i couldnt win because her mind was so made up! lol

Apparently "they adds steroids to them powders and thats why them works"....

but this is still the case. Even as short as last month where I would mix my own powders in a shaker Id get the token "oh taking your "special" drinks hey!"......wierd but the funniest is I call it the breakfast of champions and noone knows what it means! lol.

This is the stuff i looked into a while back, quite a high DHA:EPA ratio and is relatively cheap compared to some other products I've seen. I'm not to botherd about the whole heavy metal issue with fish oil, but could be a good choice if you really want to be certain for pregnancy.

algae is acidic... but then so are fish oils lol the EPA & DHA overrules that issue for me ;)

Taking flax seeds & hemp oil etc for lots of ALA that will get converted to omega-3s (albeit at a low rate) is another option that does work.
