Sumo Deadlift High Pull

Anyone ever do this variation? They look great for increasing power/speed/size of the upper body. Must have allot of carry over to the big compounds.

Yeah, have done Sumo High Pulls... top exercise, better than regular High Pulls. Technique is pretty easy as the movement is very natural. Yes, good for increasing whole body explosiveness.

debatable.

that's not a pull.

It looks like a sumo > upright row. they are only using light weights so you'll get feck all carryover into big compounds.

So in other words its a pussy exercise which might help with conditioning in a similar manner to BB complexes.

If you are looking for an exercise for carry over then do some cleans or jump shrugs instead.

I am going to use them in place of hang cleans for a 6-8 week period. Only thig i worry about is my wrist health. upright rowing movements have never went down well with my skinny little wrists!

What grip width do you use exactly? Appx 12 inch or do you prefer a bit more width? (easy Simon) The wider you go the more side the delts, inparticulr the side delts come into it...which isnt a bad thing from a BB point of view

Cleaver - Im talking about using a weight that allows for between 6-12 reps just.

The is it a pull/upright row depends upon how you contract your back and hold your arms (obviously!). Top part of the movement doesn't have to be as an upright row.

Pick a heavy enough weight (failure in the 4-6 range) and go as explosively as possible and it does build your trap power pretty effectively.

Agree though that Cleans are superior... Power Cleans I think being the most effective (for me anyway).

I also believe these not to be pulls. Sumo Deadlift into an Upright Row imo.

See here: http://www.weighttrainersunited.com/highpulls.html

I'd also say that I doubt you'd be able to perform that movement with a close grip like in the vids so I think they don't really have a choice.

Perhaps a better test would be to do High Pulls off of blocks. So it'll start off like a Deadlift kinda off blocks into a proper high pull.

Nevertheless, it looks hard work for sure (feck your wrists up though lol).

I have been doing hang cleans and power cleans for a while and fancy another variation. Both great exercises

Jump shrugs

Allows you to overload your clean weight thus getting you used to pulling heavier weights. Virtually uses all the muscles used for a power clean without having to catch the bar.

These are good but be careful... i normally end up with a niggling trap injury when I do these.

Agree with the guys saying that what CrossFit calls a sumo high pull, is not really a high pull. They're not really deadlifts either, because they are touch and go.
