Soleus Stretches

Postby Benny on Sat Jan 30, 2010 5:11 pm

Having a bit of problem with my right soleus (swollen and tender) possibly due to too big a R.O.M when working calves.

It's quite tender the majority of the length from the ankle to the knee only on the outter side. The knee feels fine but the ankle is a being affected slightly (with some stiffness).

I'm already doing standing & lying hamstring stretches, lying glute stretches, abductor & adductor stretches, standing & lying quad stretches, standing gastrocnemius stretches and kneeling hip flexor stretches.

Does anybody know of any stretches other than the standing soleus where you stand facing a wall with knees bent and heels on the floor etc? Or any Tibialis Anterior stretches for that mater as I'm sure these will help too.

Thanks in advance,

Benny

The only soleus stretch i do is the one you describe. For tibialis, just lying flat on back with legs dead straight and pointing toes down as much as possible. Both stretches work, although am sure there are better tibialis ones about.

Kool thanks.

One I've just tried for the tibialis anterior - curl your toes and press them into the floor then flex your ankle foward, similar to the one you described.

It's frustrating as I make sure not to come up onto my toes during squats. Deffinatley going to be droping calf training if it's going to hinder my ability to train legs, perform cardio or even bloody walk!

lol, walking is quite important

I want to build my ankle strength and stability - looking at getting a pair of fivefingers for running and i'll need to extra conditioning by the looks of it. Am fairly flexible in the tibialis, but not really in the calf itself. When doing splits stretches its always the calf where i'm tight rather than the hamstrings :( .

My hamstring flexability has improved loads since stretching regulary and also performing SLDL.

I can't remember where but I remember reading that rolling a golf/tennis ball around underneath the sole of your foot, with reasonable pressure, can help to release tension and increase flexability.

Legs feel better today, think it's just an epic strain, also strangely seems to feel more tender when I'm up on my toes.

Thanks for that. Awesome post, I'm off into town tomorrow to get some tennis & golf balls and spend the day rolling around on my floor

If need be I could turn some specifically sized balls on the lathe in the workshops though I don't think this is necesary just yet.
