Rhodiola Rosea - Dose/Usage

Postby Pingu on Fri Mar 26, 2010 9:35 am

As a very frazzled, stressed penguin at the moment and trying desperately to cut out as many prescribed medications as I can (go as "natural" as possible, within reason!) I thought giving RR a go would be a good idea. I've heard you guys rave about it so much.

I have absolutely no idea whatsoever about what is the best way to take it, or how much would be a good dose.

Can anyone give me some ideas please?

Ta muchly!

I had this:

I used it to restore some kind of reaction to stims, it did work fine for me (2 tabs per day for 1 month).

They are very good, 1 or 2 a day helps, I'd go with 2 per day and taken one on waking and one before bed.

Thanks Cat. I'm not in need of help with over use of stims (I hardly use any at all now and caffeine is virtually nil) but if it helps with anxiety and stress then I'm all for it :D

Also looking at GABA and 5-HTP at night for a little while to try and get on top of this....sound ok????

Uhm... I wouldn't say that Rhodiola did anything for anxiety or anything like that, but then again I took it right when things at work started going ti*s up so the tension level was not normal.
Well worth giving it a try tho!
Haven't tried 5-HTP or GABA, but if you're taking ANYTHING that has to do with serotonine/dopamine (particularly IMAOs) I'd wean off them for a couple of weeks at least before ading anything new.

Thanks for the warning. I've actually stopped taking my ADs because I just don't want to be reliant on pharmaceuticals. Trying to do everything as positively and naturally as I can. Getting there but this is definitely one area I need some help in, particularly at the moment.

I'd look towards zinc and magnesium first before GABA and 5HTP but you already know the deal with ZMA so no need to into detail.

GABA does mellow you out a little and I used to liken it to smoking weed but without any of the draw backs but it can potentially become addictive. I am tempted to get some again as it's been a while.

I think it's outside the zinc and magnesium Alex. I've managed to (finally) get my digestion sorted out and have been supplementing the last few weeks alongside the correct diet to make sure these two are of a suitable level. I have really noticed a difference. Enjoying some Epson Salt baths too! (although I get bored, perhaps I should put my goggles and hat on, that might help! ).

I think I need a bigger helping hand right now and I do not want to start taking the prescribed ADs again.

I appreciate the warning about GABA being addictive though, I will definitely keep that in mind.

If you take 5-HTP, take it alongside Vit B6, as it helps with its metabolism into serotonin. Question then is the extent to which the serotonin crosses the blood-brain barrier (the molecule is quite large).

You certainly don't want to be taking it with, or even close to, SSRIs or MAOIs if that's what you're being prescribed at the moment either, as there's then a risk of serotonin syndrome.

I've not had any prescribed ADs for about 2 weeks now Ollie, so there's no problem there. It's made me realise how much I do need some help though, mainly with the anxiety (which my ADs were mainly there for and are very good at relieving), hence me looking in more detail at all of this.

I'll make sure I take my B Vit at night with the HTP then so it can do it's thing. Thanks for pointing that out!

1 at breakfast, if you need it one at lunch too. I wouldn't take RR before bed as it stops me sleeping.

Did wonders for my mood and generally shifted my attitude to one of a positive outlook. I recommended it to the 1/2 breed (you know who I mean) who's now touting it as their miracle find. If it can help them it can certainly help you.

Thanks Lys! I'm definitely going to get some today. Appreciate the heads up about not having it before bed. Last thing I want is to have trouble sleeping.

And hey, if can have that effect on the half breed then bugger me there must definitely be something to it!!!! :o

Yeah take 250mg first thing in the morning, if you don't find it helping after about 2 weeks then try taking another 250mg at lunch.

Do not take before bed if you want to sleep! Though 500mg in the evening for men can have some desirable effects later on in bed.... stallion baby!!
