maybe he's not using his lats to pull himslf up as they are the weakest link! Time to relearn how to do the exersize?

I feel other things like yates rows (using an ez bar) work the lats great. same with the old seated cable row machine - classic back exercise and it really works me good.
Not so sure about single arm db rows. i think i get more out of the yates or tbars but i should maybe stick it for a few weeks for some slightly new angle of stimulation?
