Rab's Strength, Thickness & Strongman Training

Postby Rab on Mon Feb 23, 2009 9:23 pm

Best to start afresh and keep up with Mark in the journal stakes.

In short. I want to work on thickness, strength and train for a wee strongman competition at my local place in early summer.

No time like the present....

Workout 1

Paused Bench Press
80k x5
100k x2
100k x2
105k x2
107.5k x2
110k x2
100k x2
100k x2

Hang Clean to Push Press
40k x6
60k x3
65kx3
70k x3

Rilla Pullup Complex
WG Pullups - BW x8, BW +20k x6, BW x8
V-Bar Pullups - BW +20k x6
Chins - BW +20k x6

Dips
BW x8
BW +18kg x8
BW +42kg x6
BW +42kg x5

**************************

Tough session. Benching was easy enough. Getting much better at controling the weight and getting much more speed off my chest from a paused position. I could go all night on bench :)

Happy with the hang cleans. Lots of room for improvement i technique and weight though.

I find pullups hard from a volume point of view. fade th quickest on this. Going to up the workrate and improve this

Dips were bloody hard at the end of this session. I had to drop a lot of weight for that reason. May need to look at placing them earlier in the workout or on a different day

Good stuff Rab. Do you have access to event equipment? By that i mean, tyres/logs/yoke etc?
I've found a place in Aberdeen with the above and i think ill go down on Wed to check it out to supplement my powerlifting.
Good luck :)

Should make yourself a sledge mate.

Ill need to see over the next few weeks what the events are going to be and then start a bit of event training.

A sledge would be a good one but getting a harness and pulling my car or my old mand van would maybe be more proactical as i dont have any plates.

If tyre flipping is on the cards then im going to ask my mate to stash an old tractor tyre round the back of a building at an industrial estate just down from me where there is plenty space to do it in peace at nights or maybe saturday mornings or something.

Will just need to see what is decided over the coming weeks. I might just have to go to the strongman gym in Dumbarton which isnt far from my work, but about 30 miles from my house. Im taking it far too seriously though!

Workout 2

Slightly altered the plan. Trial and error.

ATG Squats
60k 2x8
100k x5
120k x5
140k x5
150k x2
140k x2
140k x2

Power Cleans - Push Press
50k x4
60k x2
70k x2
80k x2
90k x1
90k x1

T-Bar Rows
60k x8
70k x6
80k x6
90k x4

DB Curls
27.5kg x5

**********************

Felt really good on the squats tonight. Got some really good speed which i need to work on. Its going to take time to build up my stamina on them as im used to HIT.

Getting better at the power cleans and press, probably more due to getting better at the technique.

wee set of db curls at the end to show my mate who the swinging curl king is

Those squats are great Rab...and your PCs are getting much stronger! Managing to nail the form on them all? (I always thought it looked a tad tricky to me!)

See, if I'd looked at that session 5minutes ago I'd say it was pretty sweet. Unfortunately for you, I just looked at Rilla's workout first. UP YOUR GAME!!!

Oh and edit your sig, the code showing is annoying me. ;)

Very nice squatting Rab.
It's really weird that you're a better squatter and bencher while I press better overhead and deadlift more (at least I used to).
