Pre Competition Diet?

Postby Coop_de_Ville on Mon Jan 03, 2011 1:08 pm

Hi guys I am just after some advice on what I should be taking in prior to my trial for the World Junior Championships squad tomorrow?

I have been on the anabolic diet for around 5-6 weeks now and have lost a good amount of fat (probably a bit of muscle too) my lifts haven't deteriorated too much either (Power Clean 120kg).

I am weighing 94.3kg as of this morning.

As my test is purely anaerobic but it does involve a few repeat tests i.e (2 bobsleigh max single man push/2 combo push with driver/2 30m standing start sprint tests.)

So I am wondering wether to carb load and if so how much? I don't see the point in going overboard as this will bloat me to some extent and effect power/weight ratio.

My thoughts were 2 meals today of carbs perhaps brown rice at lunch and maybe some oats later in the afternoon and maybe some oats in the morning.

Any thoughts?

Sounds sensible. "Carb-loading" surely isn't necessary? It's not like you're going to be using massive amounts of glycogen in those sprints.

What Ollie said- my main priority would just be making sure I didn't eat anything likely to upset my guts, so keep it bland and familiar; you don't want to risk the squits on the big day!

I'd say meal timing on the day is more important than the day before.
Get a decent amount of carbs and protein in you and you should be good.

Probably a similar approach to before a game of rugby.

Spag Bol the night before, Oats with some Honey in the morning and a releatively decent meal 2-3 hours before hand say Chicken and Pasta or Rice.

If you like Beetroot then can be a good addition as it's loading with Folic Acid and good for stamina. Many sports nutritionists are starting to include this more and more for their athletes.

few extra clean carb meals today imo. You don't want to be glycogen depleted, but you don't want to gain significant water weight. You also want to stay away from carbs tomorrow as you haven't been training with carbs. As we know from muscle metabolism glucose oxidation is also a mechanism which can become 'untrained' ;)

So my opinion is eat 200g clean carbs today...pretty similar to your thoughts.

agree with Spit and Karlos. couple of hundred grams of familiar carbs today

Id expect to lose your appetite for bland stuff close to the event with a jangley belly. Id keep some oaty flapjacks, chocolate bars etc on hand and a littlemarinated chicen or beef in a tub....stuff easy to snck on if your appetite dies so you can eat something still to avoid any blood sugar drops when on th spot

The anabolic diet has a weekend semi-carb up doesn't it? If your test is just a day or two after this then I'd just introduce an extra 100g or so of carbs on the night before and the same in the morning... otherwise similar suggestions to the others for what to eat, timing etc.
