Not tbf most rugby players aren't too bad at pro level cos rugby is one of the few sports that prioritises very heavily the use of good strength training and so you get good coaches (most of the time).

Box Squats are for hamstrings and hip work. And are good if done correctly. I have no problem with them. Their use is different.

@KP: I disagree.

I give up lol

@Karlos: as low as you can go whilst keeping correct form. I can probably sit 1-2 inches lower but then they'll be a stain on the ground and I'll be rounding my back too much.

So they do not develop the quads then?

If you went just below parallel there would be a smilar cut off point but with more weight. Same for Box Squats.

Yep there is - but as Squats require and place the most effort on the body - the movements do call upon relatively fragile parts of the body to engage the full movement.

IE - Squats - ATG - Where does the initial force come from and which parts get impacted? There is a point at which risk to injury is too great IMHO - this isnt just me saying this - this is the old school as well who are now in there 50's with serious leg problems - you could argue that they didnt do them properly - but for it to effect soo many - there must be a reason - and I cant see all of them doing the movements incorrectly. There ok if you dont want to increase weight much and want to train in the pain free zone - but if you are going to push to progress - the point at which injury risk comes in needs some though - hence why below parallel came in - which stimulates the quads as well - either that or all BB's are pumping there quads up with air.

Well my back stays straight, like marks it is literally just my calves bouncing off my hamstrings....without the poo thing though. :)

They're not great for quad work IF DONE PROPERLY.

That is, WIDE STANCE (like a Powerlifter squat) and SLOW to sit down whilst sticking your arse/hips right back. Pause for 1-2 secs on the box/seat, then rock slightly forward and explode up. If you can't control the weight on the way down it's too heavy. An all too common mistake.

If you do them as I say above, then you'll realise in the first set, first rep even, that they work the hams A LOT.

Sure, they work the quads but not as good as other quad exercises, like full squats etc.

Box squats are great. Took me a while to get the technique and maintain back position but got it now. :D

Alex, I suspect this is what inspired your post anyway but there's a good article on http://www.elitefts.com about partial lifts at the moment; the author makes quite a convincing case as to why partial work with heavy weights can help protect against injury, and how (as you say) most sports aren't consistently played through a full ROM.

OK. Not that I'd exactly class myself as a 'pro athlete', but as mountain biker I can state that if I ever go through full ROM then something has gone badly wrong...!

You're showing your age now old boy!Klein haven't made bikes for some years, they got swallowed up by Trek and then taken out the back and shot I think... some of the sweetest bikes of their era though.

I've got one of these:

Don’t let the sets last much longer than ten seconds, total. Kinda like sex with a hot chick, hit it hard for ten seconds.
