How important is it to go heavy on shoulders day?

Postby Jake The Muss on Thu Sep 11, 2008 2:34 pm

As of late i have been hitting my shoulders with more light, high rep isolation movements as opposed to going heavy on every rep of every set. I feel the pump i have been acheiving is great and wondered if I should bother to return to my lower rep, heavy sets agan? I now tend to warm up with 3-4 sets of seated presses then off onto DB's and cables for loads of isolation work. With a heavy chest day then a heavy back day is it important to hit the shoulders with heavy weights or do you think they get enough heavy work on chest and back days? Opinions fellas?

i like heavy on the presses but find 20 reps + on the isolation really work nicely. Along with weighted streches

Pretty good question. I personally have weak looking shoulders and feel a need to pound several shades out of them with heavy pressing.

I've cut back on heavy shoulder work due tp chest and back and my shoulders are still very good.

I still think you need to do some heavy pressing, but not low rep stuff.

Yeah, sort of what I was thinking. Keep the heavy pressing then lots of light iso movements. Seems to be giving me a very full, pumped feeling :D

My shoulders are not bad strength wise, i just have a thing about them being bigger to compensate for my small bone structure hence i look naturally narrow.

I have been trying to get away from the low reps on every bodypart, gone a bit stale as of late, especially on shoulders.

I always try and get a heavy compound in, which currently is HC > PP but this could equally be PP or Military Press but I tend to pyramid up in sets of 5 reps so I'm warming up the muscles and then the last couple of sets are where the big effort comes in. However I do tend to keep the form a lot tighter and slower so although I'm not max effort at 5 reps on the intital sets, I'm still working the muscle well.

After that I tend to stick between 8-15 reps and keep the movements slower so I can get a beter feel for the targetted shoulder muscle working.
