Really liking this article. Especially the parts about transferring the principles to other parts of your life.

Go on, read it!

5x5 for size? Surely not. :?
A 135/180/180 (~500 total) makes you massive? Unlikely. :(

3x8-12 at those numbers (aka Volume) would give you some good size.

Add 30% onto those numbers (Progression) for reps and you will have gained even more size.

All as ever IMHO :D

I know I for one will never get to a 500 kg total if I don't grow more.

Having read the entire article, I can assure you that it doesn't say "5x5 is THE best for getting hyyyyyuuuuggge".
It is however a very good article, with some very good points being made.
It also doesn't say that a 500kg total will make you massive - it says if you lift heavy (=get strong) and eat big, you will get big. Is that fso far-fetched?

Ok the title is
The Reg Park Way To Serious Size And Strength

and then he says
Rule 7: Start reaping the benefits of the 5x5 program

and before that he says
Once you get your bench up to 300 pounds, and your squat and deadlift up to 400 pounds, you'll notice a big difference in how your physique looks.

It's T-Nation... It's just some dude (Mike Mahler) re-pimping someones work (Reg Parks) in order to drum up business... :D

lol the old classic bodybuilders sets & reps. Well, if that was so good why aren't 99% of men in the gyms across the world huge :?:

5x5 will work for sure.
3x8-12 will work for sure.

Many many things will work, you just have to vary it. Wave-like loading in and out of an intensification & accumulation phase is what I believe to be one of the best ways. But again, there are always variations that can be made to help progress that bit better,

Do you think 5x5 can make significant improvements to body comp. then Scott?

Its by far my favourite way to train as it gives me consistancy, a clear path for progression and good strength gains, but ive not done it for a while as i was under the impression that it wouldnt do much for my fat loss or muscle mass gains.

I don't think it's the best prog to follow for fat loss. If you work your ass off it will help for sure. By from my experience the lactic acid training progs work best for fat loss. And for some people that prog can also increase strength & build muscle.

Focus on one main goal at a time, then review and amend when the goal is met. If you want to lose 5% BF fast say then choose a prog that is best for that. Once you've reached that goal amend the prog to attain the next goal. If another 5% BF reduction is desired then redo the same prog but with amended exercises etc.

I think that's why I like HST and seem to get good results from it.

There's planned loading and it's high frequency to take advantage of elevated protein synthesis in the muscle which stops around 36 hours after training.

Not only do you vary the intensity and weight through light, moderate and heavy days, but you reduce the reps every two weeks.

So for 6 weeks you are lifting more EVERY single session, with the final two weeks being heavy every time with the aim of beating the last session, using negatives and rest pause if the need arises (and you know it will).
This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill, fifteen percent concentrated power of will. Five percent pleasure and fifty percent pain.
