How to bring up chest/delt strength?

Postby Jake The Muss on Sat May 31, 2008 7:38 pm

Been thinking that although i have quite a good bench press and shoulder press, most of my strength comes from my triceps. So when it comes to isolation movements such as flyes, the weights used are not nearly as impressive. So i guess the question is should i alter my routine to include a few more exercises that minimise tricep involvement and maybe in doing this my bench/shoulder presses may improve? What do you think?

Dont get me wrong, benching really gives me a good pump in the chest, but i just dont think that my actual chest muscles are as strong as they should be,sort of a weak link in my quest to bench 200kg! :D

You've probably seen the tempo stuff I've been doing for side raises which I've been happy with.

Depends what part of the shoulder you're trying to bring up.

Fly's for Chest every time but aim for the lower part of the movement and more stretch, stopping short at the top.

Yes,the tempo stuff seems interesting. Would you suggest doing all movements or just one/two with the tempo method.

Fly's I'd do pretty slow anyway as they can be a fairly high risk movement. I have found that using a light first set to stretch helps before going heavy. I tend to hold DB's out stretched for 1 second before bringing back in on this set. Actually hurts/burns a lot but you'll reap the gains on the following heavy sets.

Side Raises work really well on tempo, especially when you superset with the same weight at a normal tempo afte but I doubt they'll relate to bringing up your Bench. Doing seated is far more effective over standing.

I quite like doing Standing DB Press as they're really hard over seated and I find gains here translate really well across to seated and indirectly benching.

Just go light and for the stretch initially and build up strength that way.

Will do Alex, think i will try seated side raises too. Standing DB presses will have to wait until i get more weight. Thanks fella!
