Materialistic and People!

Postby kp1512 on Wed Mar 23, 2011 12:49 pm

So what are peoples aims or goals to have a stable financial life?

Was listening into a conv yday and was pretty amazed as how many people put materialitic things ahead of basic things.

I had one guy who wanted an r8 and a holiday home in Dubai

Another wanted a mansion and a supercar

Me? Mortage and debt free by 35, kids with top education and to be able to have 2 holidays a year and work when I want to

What is your goal when it comes to things like this?

I've always thought I wanted the mansion, supercar, etc but the more I think about it, I think I just want to be able to afford those things, rather than actually wanting them. Being able to buy such things suggests success and I think that's what I'm after.

On a similar note, I saw quite a cool number plate yesterday - something like PR07 31N - I know it doesn't conform to the standard registrations, but I only caught a qucik glimpse and I think that's what it was. Guy driving it was a bit of a fattry though lol

health, job longevity, doing the best job i can do bringing my daughter up

if i had the cash (this is where my wife totally disagrees) i would move to south africa and buy a vineyard, and work the land.
cars dont do it for me
holidays do- but quite happy going to spain at the moment and seeing my littlun just have a ball
houses- tbh i really dont see the point in owning one, overpriced nonsense and millstone.
clothing and trainers- bit of a sucker here- an elitist- hate seeing people wearing same stuff
food- i enjoy good food, but you wouldnt catch me being a prik and eating in the ivy or nobu -that to me is diksville

I'm seriously thinking about moving away to somewhere else so I can be mortgage free, but family ties stop me.

If I didn't have kids, I'd be off to the sun and the sea

zero irony
i enjoy wine, i am not exactly a quaffing buff, but i do know a bit about it.
i just think it would be a wonderful existence- the mrs wouldnt go, simply because she abhors the racists, and is fearful for our daughter?

for me s.a. has got everything i need, sun, sea, sharks, wildlife and countless michelin star restaurants that are fractional of the cost anywhere else in the world.

To have a happy life. It has been pretty good so far. Like everyone I've had my ups & downs. I'm not a rich guy but I can get by & I've passed the stage in life where I wanted to be loaded.

Short terms aims, to ensure I have my plans in place for when I become self employed later this year. Then to work my nuts off to make sure the business is the success I wish it to be & longer term goal will be to grow said business.

I must be mad at my grand old age!!!!

It is amazing how well people have been brainwashed into putting material possessions ahead of anything else.

When people see somebody now they don't judge them on their qualities or achievements but on what car he drives and what pair of sunglasses they have on their head etc! And what amazes me is how people think "shopping" is a leisure activity! Seriously WTF!

I find it uncomfortable to listen to some parents I know talk about prioritising new cars or expensive holidays when at the same time they could be doing better with their kids who are missing out. As a single person, or someone with no responsibilities, it's ok to be a bit frivilous with what you spend your cash on... once you have responsibility however it's a different matter.

As for the concept of materialism in general, sure I want certain things that I think will lead to me having a happy fulfilling life, but beyond that I have never really had dreams of vast amoutns of money.

Nice house somewhere warmer than here, and part time work so i can enjoy things and indulge my hobbies and interests would be my ideal thing... if all goes well in the next twelve months and I do things sensibly this isn't actually impossible.

in my early twenties I had a decent income and more 'spare' cash than I've had since - yet was pretty unfulfilled and unhappy. Don't get me wrong - having debts and no money is horrific and far worse (been there too) but for me happiness is more about being able to do the things you feel you need to rather than just having loads of money... and as trite as it sounds I genuinely feel when you struggle a little for something it gives you more pleasure than just being able to go out and pay for it easily.

My materialism pretty much went out the window when my son was born with health problems . After that they seemed ..pointless

I do have a nice car and a nice house but Id give it all away tomorrow for my son to be healthy

R8 would be nice though :D

It is nuts how we do take health for granted. All these things that appear materialistic - mean nothing if you have serious health issues.
