carb cycling

Postby Karlos on Thu Jun 10, 2010 4:47 pm

Decided instead of doing the usual protocol for me (which is carbs post exercise, with additional carb cheat meal) I'm going to do carb cycling.

Would a good approach be 2 days low carb, one day high? (<100 & ~200g)

I want to keep it simple, so no med carb days or measuring grams of carbs. Any thoughts?

Why not keep it even simpler and just eat a moderate amount each day. I don't think carb cycling is really necessary unless you're looking at sub 8% nor do I think timing carbs through the day makes that much difference apart from close to sleep. As long as the sources are unrefined then no need to make it complicated.

I'm looking to get to about 8% for my hols mate, probably around 12% atm, but i'm not really sure. I am somewhat insulin resistant so benefit from periods of low carbs, plus i generally feel better when i'm not eating carbs (more alert & motivated).

I've read around a bit and i like the idea of 2 days low one day high. I understand where your coming from though and for a lot of individuals simply improving carb source is a massive improvement.

Basically -

-2 low carb days (~50g carbs from 'negligible' sources) followed by 1 high
-protein high, fats medium (P250g - F100g)
-5 meals a day
-carb days always on an exercise day
-Carby 'treat' after exercise on carb days (bread/milk/cereals/malt loaf mmm)
-All other carb meals oats, brown rice, quinoa, sweet pots etc.
-around 300g carbs on carb days

Have I covered everything? The reason i'm doing this is i feel i'll get a fair amount of fat loss from excluding carbs on exercise days, instead of halting lipolysis with my usual PWO carbs...plus carb cycling is one of the main ways bodybuilder folk get ripped. 8-)
