Lose The Lunges?

Postby Alex on Mon Mar 24, 2008 9:31 pm

I know a lot don't like these because of knee problems they can cause.

Sometimes I get on with them, sometimes I don't.

I'm thinking of ditching and adding a bit more volume to RDL's instead.

Also Plyometric's are similar to Lunges in some of the exercises but without the knee stress.

Good idea?

Lunges are ok until you start pushing hard... which you need to do to progress and this is the problem. Once you get near the limit you just start wobbling about, it's inevitable. Also as you're so warmed up, and suffering pain from lactic acid, little twinges go unnoticed and you just keep pushing.

Next day and knee problems start to rear their ugly heads. Simply not worth it imho.

I like lunges alot. Mostly as a low weight, high rep finisher though...

Yeah lightweight and they're great, I always do them as part of my warmup with just bodyweight.

I like Hack squats on the sled thing in my gym, but im sure Health4Ni or Canuck would give me a slap for doing them :)

Nothing else hits my quads as hard.. i almost fall off the machine.

I might have to start doing these... I really like the way lunges hit my hammies/glutes and I figure split squats would be the same...

Is this basically like a Lunge but not steping out and back again for each rep?

Thats how i do my lunges anyway! one step down then knock out the ten reps for that leg

didnt realise it was called split squats! just thought it was a variation of lunges!
