Foam Rollers for Recuperation

Postby simon m on Fri Feb 26, 2010 11:26 am

Has anyone used the foam rollers you see in the gym for shoulder and back recuperation?

If so, can you give me some tips as I'm think of getting one for home ue.

Thanks

A mate if mine who nearly died in a motorcycle accident (about 15years) & still suffers due to it, he also trains, bought one last year & it has worked very well for him. They most definately are not a pile of shit.

I believe someone on the forum bought one last year although I cannot remember who.

I have a foam roller but hardly ever use it. Was recommended by my physio.

It's great for ITB release - but that hurts! I do use it for quads, lower & upper back too though and it does help.

Upper back is one of the easiest things to stretch out with it - Just lie on the thing and lean/reach/stretch back - roll back & forth now & again and/or stretch at different points on your back - Job done

Lower back is more difficult for me as it's so bendy I can have my ass on the floor and my mid/lower back on the floor and still not get much of a stretch - Lower back bend so easily - You can stretch the muscles a bit by rolling back & forth though and that feels good.

You can also use it for hitting the kids and playing gladiators (I bought the 4' long one especially for that prupose)

I must start using it again!

i guess it depends what the use is - in your example it was an existing injury so continous blood flow in massage actions may be of value but for fitness...and non-injury personnel? jury has got to be out. i got one of those rollers in a chair and its just a waste - feels good to sit, relax, listen to music on it etc...but other than that its just an expensive waste of space

Foam rollers are good for the legs and upper back. They are one of the best pre/rehab tools around, effectively a free deep tissue massage, but more difficult because inflicting pain upon yourself is harder than someone else doing it. I use one every session on my legs, it doesn't even hurt anymore, it feels kiinda nice :)

I don't know what you've got KP, but you can pick up foam roller for less than a tenner.

Good job Simon ignores most of what you say. In fact a good job we all do

Foam rollers are for pussy's IMO.

If you want a deep massage go roll on a knarly log or play some rugby and get smashed in the leg a few times.

Now that would be an achievement - I am man enough to admit a tear or two came to my eye last time I had that done by a physio

foam rollers are great. They loosen and break down scar tissue. They've really helped me upper back and my legs out. I highly rate them.

I have one of these: https://www.otiumlifestyle.com/shop/sea ... &display=6

Maybe a slightly smaller circumference though.

They'll def help your shoulders. Just roll on them until you feel some pain and try to get rid of the pain; that easy tbh. That way you know it's been released.

Have never used one and no clue at all about effectiveness... but wouldn't a bit of foam pipe lagging work just as well?

I've always found them to be really helpful, and give nice pain! Always feels like they loosen me up a bit too. My physio swears by them,..

The key is to have something firm (advice for life that, really)- I keep meaning to go down to Jewsons and buy a length of PVC pipe, but I wouldn't want to start out on something like that, I think the agony of your IT band in particular would be more than any man could take.

I roll about on a light weight medicine ball before/after workouts and stuff. Good for spine decompression after squatting etc along with hanging from bars/pull-throughs
