What's your shopping bill like?

Postby Will on Mon Feb 08, 2010 9:51 am

I know money is a bit of a crass subject to discuss, so forgive me. Furthermore, this is not written with the intent to belittle or pick apart what people can afford to spend, I'm just curious, as I know we have family people and couples on here, but also people that live by themselves or independently (myself included). I try and buy carefully but I also like to buy good quality but inevitably the better the food I buy the higher the cost seems to be - which is understandable, but also quite vexing.

At the moment for myself alone I spend around £70 on average per week. This is a mixture of Sainsbury's and Waitrose, though I get more bang for my buck from Sainsbury's. My local butcher has closed down and there aren't any within a sensible mileage from me - ones that I trust at any rate. And turns to a 30min trip at least, and unfortunately closes by the time I escape from work. Anyway, that aside I don't buy from the butcher as much as I used to which saddens me :( I do buy from the counter in the supermarkets as that's the best option that I have for moment, unfortunately my free time is limited so I choose the lazy option :(

Anyway, I'm just curious how much you guys get through. A lot of people are astounded that I spend that much on food per week for myself - but I think it's about right?

Gone up twice recently. They all bumped them up before the change in VAT. This allowed them to say that they were taking the VAT hit for customers.

Wait a few weeks and bump them again. Shower of cnuts. :(

So it's not just me then - I just seem to have less and less money available, but I refuse to buy shit food. I don't really drink, so no money goes on that. It just seems to be increasingly difficult to get good quality foods at a decent price. I just thought I had missed something.

I ususally average around £50. With my new diet plan it's gone up a bit as it's less carbs and carbs are cheap! Protein and fats tend to be more expensive. Probaly nearer to £60 now I'd say though I did buy a few things like scales, knife etc.

Being surrounded by other students I find it shocking that people can spend less than £10 a week on food! £30 is usually the average for most of us students. I've never had a problem parting with fair amounts of cash for food as it is essential.

30 quid a week, but living at home i get a fair bit of food paid for. 8-)

I'd imagine a lot of students get most their calorific intake from ale?

I'm lucky in that I get meat at a decent price from my Butcher but due to the quantity this still sets me back £30-£40 a week. This is however half as much as supermarket offering due to being free range/organic.

The rest goes on oils, vegetables and a small amount on carbs like rice so my bill is probably close to £70 at a guess. The main price rise that I've noticed is with fruit and vegetables where I've seen most greens go up by 40% during the past 2 months.

that's interesting as my green veggies and veggie consumption is also quite high in general, and I always presumed it to be the meat/fish products that were bumping up the prices.

You know, thanks for this thread.

Andy and I have noticed the last few weeks a massive change. Whereas before we were always coming in well under budget, leaving ourselves enough for "emergency" shopping in the week, this last few we have pretty much spent the entire lot in our big weekly shop, and what we get hasn't changed that much (being creatures of habit).

I thought it was us...but I guess its not.

Supermarket bills for us have dropped dramatically since I've drastically reduced buying meat. Veg, fruit & beans/legumes etc is so much cheaper. Plant protein powder is still being consumed outside of training pre-post just to bolster protein intake.

But with the wean nearly here, in a few months foods bills will go up lots

I spend about £60 per week in the supermarket for me and her. I also spend some money on eggs at the local fruit shop as they are local free range and good value at £1.30 per half doz large eggs. Spend about £10 in there usually picking up some fruti or veg at the same time.

I often buy chicken wholesale. £37 for 10kg. That doesnt factor into the above. I tend to just buy my red meats from the supermarket just now as i aint eating much steak as my jaw isnt in the best state for rampant munching of red meat. just some mince which you get a very good deal on at 1kg for a fiver most of the time
