Belts

Postby SCOTT GALTON on Tue Feb 19, 2008 12:39 pm

Does anyone use a belt for lifting. I have a rather nice thick power lifting number which is great for squats and deads but is a bit ott for other stuff. Im thinking about getting one of those velcro numbers for when i dont need so much support. I like to wear a belt as my back can get a bit dodgy. Anyone got any recommendations? The mp one looks ok

a big belt isnt any god fo the likes of clean and press ans on your last few reps you might be very close to your body with the clean and catch the buckle on the way up. i think the little york ones you get in argos for £8 would do the trick. I dont know what the quality of the MP belts are like.

I weened myself off using a belt over time and now never use one at all.

If I was going to attempt a 1 rep max for squats or deads then I'd use one for insurance though..

Likewise. I do everything raw as I'd prefer area to strengthen up rather than be supported and lead to possible weakness.

Wrist Wraps are the only exception. Got my kevlar's from APT, tried them yesterday and was very impressed.

I'm belt free as well.

I'd reccommend not having one unless you are constantly over-reaching like a tubby PL. Then I'd suggest one for maximal lifts and comps only.

I always used to use one for heavy squats years ago. But I do not believe in them now. I still have a couple covered in dust some where.

I use a neo belt for the heavy end of my deads and squats, but im in the market for a proper PL belt and some wraps.

Like others i wouldnt use them for anything else but big attempts... the kids doing back assisted bicep curls in my gym in a belt just annoy me.

I have an Inzer belt but I very rarely use it, with squatting atg I find it digs in too much & makes it difficult to get all the way down. If I switch to PL squats at some point then I might use it more.

Agreed,

Weight belt for 1RMs really...

using a weight belt in this case does not impair the neurological patterns of force production

I don't use one - I don't find them helpful. The only type of belt I use is a weighted belt for dips / pulls ups.

Unless you're doing 1-3rm on deadlifts and squats id try and do without. There is alot of research out there that suggests belts may make back problems worse.

I personally, like mark, only use my belt the heavier end of squats and deads. It's inzer, the only problem with it is it's so damn thick and heavy it probably deducts 10kg from your squat :D

belts should only be used by powerlifters imo. As mentioned, the 1-3RM rep range lends itself to wearing a belt. For everyone else it's detrimental to the muscles in that area; thus making them weaker. And so more likely to injure yourself when doing an exercise without a belt... i.e. any time not in the gym.
