Detox Advice

Scott, the missus wants to serious sort herself out as she's been having bouts of feeling quite bloated and sometimes painfull stomach with various trips to the Dr's staying it's IBS related. We've identified alot of foods that cause her issues and generally it's accumlative so after a couple of days of consuming the same type of food. These are the usual suspects like bread, cheese, soda, chocolate, very spicy foods and most acidic foods which may come as no surprise.

I feel a detox/cleanse may help her digestive tract and help her to be able to enjoy these foods on the odd occassion. Generally she's taken to eating a lot of decent salads and basmati rice and doesn't eat nay meat and a little fish. She is however a bit of a carb craver.

I've pretty much told her straight that it may be 3 months for a full detox which the correct foods and then she'll find it easier to maintain but what product(s) would you recommend to get her started. Capsules and/or tasteless droppers would be prefered as she doesn't stomach powders too well.

Im still currently a bit messed up from food poisoning I got over a week ago. After the initial sickness my stomach was destroyed, I literally wasnt hungry at all for days despite very little food and would feel full very easily, also add in some bowel trouble. Anyway queue a docs visit and apparently i've IBS, at least currently anyway. Got prescribed Mebeverine Tablets BP 135mg and these have definately improved the situation along with time I guess. You say shes been to the docs so perhaps she has already tried the magical pills route but if she hadnt perhaps its worth a trip to the pharmacy. Though obviously your detox idea sounds much better in terms of the long term

I'll post after the Lions game.

But I wouldn't advise doc prescribed synthetic drugs. Sorry Shicky. imo these will make it worse long term.

Depends what the problem is and how severe the symptoms are, but usually with food related problems the doctor isn't going to be much help

@Alex:

  • No wheat: no bread, no pasta, no cakes, no buns, no baked & highly processed white flour goods. This will massively help.
  • Water is a key ingredient here. She should get at least 2 litres a day. Start with that if she doesn't drink much. But if 2 litres is near what she gets now, then 3 litres would be ideal.
  • To really get serious though, adding Greens & himalayan salt to the water would be perfect.
    • My preferred Greens choice at the moment is: Greenshield. The Clay in it is a great detoxifier.
      • Fresh lemon juice with the Greens may help the taste if she issues with it. Also, the juice of 1/2 - 1 lemon with warm water first thing on an empty stomach will kick start digestion and detoxification.
  • OxyFlush: a fantastic supp that really does work. It clears out the bowel and intestines in a gentle way (that is, no loss of electrolytes). I would suggest she starts this on a Friday evening before a quiet weekend at home; you need to be close to a toilet for the first few days! For another testimonial PM Pingu: she liked it a lot.
  • The "sicker" you are the less animal protein you should get. In this instance I don't think your gf sounds "sick", but keeping animal protein intake low will help digestion. Although it sounds like she does this already.
    • I think then, stay clear of cheese.
  • Lots of varied vegetables & green foods. Nuts are good, esp almonds & macadamias. Quinoa is great.
  • A decent multi, antioxidant & fish oils will help support the detoxification process.
  • Colonic irrigation is good. But I suspect this might be a step too far. I can't give personal recommendation on this yet, but soon will be able to.

That'll certainly get her on the right track.

Do you know if the clay in that Greenshield stuff is Bentonite? I did a cleanse with that and psyllium husk during a week-long juice fast a few years back, I think it did some good: the guides/forums I read were insistent that you need to be giving your digestive tract a break from food for the clay to work though, so I'm intrigued as to whether this is the same stuff.

Thanks for the advice. I did pre warn her what you might say and wasn't too far off. It's a very hit and miss thing as we ate pizza and dough balls at the weekend and this game her no issue at all when normally that amount of bread and cheese would cause issue.

The thing is, to begin with detoxing and avoiding certain foods and eating more of others it sounds like a really strange and not normal practice. And really in the Western world not eating bread is strange. But most breads are just crap. Very few offer anything at all. And of course there's other foods too. And you're mainly right that it's mostly acidic food people have problems with. Especially processed/refined foods.

Cutting out on those types of foods and eating more good things, as well as finding good foods that still taste nice and are almost treat like, is the key. If all you eat is veg, then that's gonna mess with your head and you'll not last long. IF you can figure out a way to do it that gets the job done, achieves compliance and then makes you feel good, you're onto a winner.

Bread and Cheese are the main ones but those have been trimmed down alot and she's happy with having the odd rice cake with a little lemon curd as a treat.

Yeah, I tried her on that and she wasn't overly keen. I loved the stuff though.
