My first semi-pro cage fight :)

Postby Matt on Mon Jul 13, 2009 11:39 pm

Hey guys, I've been gone along time, most of you might of noticed.. some of you probably dont even care :) but its been for a good reason. I postd in the powerlifting section as its best known for me :D

I've been training for my first fight, between 15-18 hours a week so I didnt really have time on top of college work for surfing the interwebs.

But its come.. and its gone, and I've got a vid woop :)

I'm in the black shorts. Its also in 4 parts for some reason (my team didnt record it, the people supporting the other guy did).

http://www.youtube.com/user/marshallmandy - heres the channel its on, i've tried downloading it, converting it and adding it together but it wont let me and i've also tried putting it in a playlist but it wont let me do that either so until I get it sorted you'll have to watch the 4 vids.
If you're not sure if you're getting quality sleep or not, this is your standard: You should always wake up under a teepee. If you don't have a boner so solid you have to do a handstand to take a morning piss, your Testosterone levels are probably low.

Mate I am really impressed with that. You were against a better striker who you couldn't take down and I'd have been impressed if you had just survived and lost a decision. To actually win the fight like that is awesome. I'm guessing you have a decent team who are already telling you this stuff but from what my advice is worth (as someone who has never fought anyone )
1. you can't go straight back standing up. If he had more composure he could have minced you. Circle away.
2. you need to actually be able to take people down and use grappling, or at least pull full guard. You pulled mount at the end of the first round and the takedown that won you the fight you pulled side control. Against someone who knows what they're doing on the ground, doing that stuff could be a disaster. He wasn't great on the ground and it showed when he tried to choke you from inside your half guard when he didn't really have anything on.

So awesome work but you have stuff to work on (although I'm sure you knew that anyway - I suppose I'm just trying to sound clever :D). I suppose the danger of being kicked in the face will be good motivation to work your weaknesses so I expect to see you kick ass next time!

1. you can't go straight back standing up. If he had more composure he could have minced you. Circle away.I know, I tried to come out of the sides when I was backed up, and there is one point at the beginning where he goes straight in when im in the side
2. you need to actually be able to take people down and use grappling, or at least pull full guard. You pulled mount at the end of the first round and the takedown that won you the fight you pulled side control. Against someone who knows what they're doing on the ground, doing that stuff could be a disaster. He wasn't great on the ground and it showed when he tried to choke you from inside your half guard when he didn't really have anything on.im bjj oriented, its what i've trained in so I know how to do the techniques, I prefer half guard over full guard, and I wanted to put knee's into his side lol my entire goal for the fight was to put alteast one knee into his side!!!! so side control was my goal when on the ground

So awesome work but you have stuff to work on (although I'm sure you knew that anyway - I suppose I'm just trying to sound clever :D). I suppose the danger of being kicked in the face will be good motivation to work your weaknesses so I expect to see you kick ass next time! stand up stand up stand up!!! hehe

KP- cheers lol i've got the first one out the way and it was a win.. I know what to work on now so next time im going to dominate him top and bottom!! BOOOOM

Submision by rear nakid choke in the end? Tough to see what was going on.

Have to agree you take downs suck, you had double under hooks and flopped to the ground and gave gaurd,

still nice win!

Well done Matt, I've no idea about this style of fighting, but I know it takes guts to get in the ring.

I had hoped you get your arse kicked as I think you need it, but well done!

haha I didnt actually mean to 'flop' to the ground when I had double unders. I tried to pull him back but ended up slipping and falling on my arse :D

Yes it was rear naked choke, I had one hand slipped across his throat, so it was a one arm rear naked choke :) I saw him tap and put my hand up as I wasnt sure, then he tapped again and thats when I jumped up.

Cheers guys :)

The guy looks like quite a predictable fighter, always throws the body kick as a lead, probably has some combo's practised to go with it.

On the ground you managed to transition from half gaurd to side control with no resistance and then he gave you his back, which is never a good idea. Learning to strike could take a while BUT using your strength and learning take downs, ground and pound from inside the gaurd (what was with the elbows to the leg?) and learning how to power out of submission attempts could be a good start IMO.

On the plus side you looked cool in the ring, even on your back which can't be learnt and your where strong enough to submit him with only one arm.

Yeah he was rather predictable, I did grab his leg at one point but couldnt lift him up but I managed to pull half guard from it, I was going to go for a groin ripper but couldnt get up onto my elbow to pull it off.

I had to give him something to think about :) I couldnt get to his ribs so I went for the legs, it does hurt like a bitch if you get it in the right place.

Cheers :)

Well done, both of having the guts to fight and actually winning. I've thought about getting into MMA before, but not sure I'd actually have the guts to do it.

What weight were you fighting at? How did you get into MMA? And if you don't mind me asking... How much did you get paid for the fight?

I was fighting at 82kg (middleweight), my club has a team, nothing :) its only semi-pro, if I had done pro then I would of gotten £200.

Semi Pro's still get paid - so you're an amateur - nothiong wrong with that and actually, even more power to you for doing that for nought. Although I think boxing is harder than cuddling on the floor
