Mini "Strongman" training get together

Postby Will on Sat Aug 08, 2009 5:30 pm

My housemate and I joined some guys off another forum to do some strongman type events (Paz off this forum too). Van pull, van pull walking backwards followed by a van push at the 75m (half way marker) for the rest. Some keg press (45kg, but uneven so a bit hard to keep in check), tyre (90kg) which we did 7 sets of 10 reps. And a seated van pull.

Great fun. Hope you enjoy the pics!

Looks like alot of fun.
You probably should've gotten a thicker rope for the hand over hand pulls, would've cut alot less into your hands. :)

Fingers aren't too bad really, looks worse than they are - I've done when yacht racing! Yeah we should have used thicker rope, but that's all they had! Ah well, just use gloves next time, no pain no gain! :D

As for me looking like Statham - if it means I get to sniff Kelly Brooke I'll take it as a huge compliment ;)

It was great fun - really tiring though, stupidly I did a mad 20T leg session on Friday, so I wasn't in a good way - though I completed everything!

The keg press was easy though it was the first time I had ever done it, it just wobbles a bit as the weight isn't even in it.

The truck pull was great fun too.

We have some lintels for farmers walk but we didn't do any of them.

Great fun and something I'm definitely keen on keeping up - will be doing it again.

Some of the faces I pull are hilarious - still good to see myself "in action". IT's so different to exercising at the gym it really is quite tough on you, I have the strength and the size for achieving good results in this, but boy oh boy this took me by surprise!!! LOVE IT! :D :D :D

We were up around Luton.

Just seen this. Looks like great fun. That's the same size of tyre my bro has, great fun flipping it round. Starts off being easy but it's surprising how quickly it creeps up on you.

Re the rope burns a climbing rope would sort that out, but they're expensive. Cheap alternative is zinc oxide tape, you don't lose any grip but it stops you getting totally shredded.

At everyone who was involved, what was your favourite bit? I like the look of the car pulling myself.

Thanks for the advice - I'll pass it on.

Favourite bit was probably the keg press.

I sincely hope that:
  1. It was a full keg
  2. You celebrated the end of the afternoon by drinking the contents

It wasn't full of beer else I'm sure the boys would have drunk it all - I don't drink anymore so it would have been wasted on me

Actually the deadlift was good fun too - 7 sets of 10 reps in a relay style is quite tough as you say. Could do with being heavier though.

If the rope hadn't caned my hands I'd have probably liked that one as well.

Paz has got some nice lintels made up for farmers walks (I think about 85kg each) so that should be good fun too.

The correct answer is "yes" if he doesn't want the Pirate king to be severely unimpressed.

Yeah I've bulked up a bit since last time you saw me. :)

I hope to play again this year as I had lots of fun. I have very little chance of turning up to training sessions though as my schedule is v.busy during the week.

Are you still taking part (as a spectator at least)?
