media:new words

Postby julesm on Wed Aug 25, 2010 9:12 am

not had a rant for a few days........

but media inception of merging two words and thinking its acceptable- for example

jeans and leggings- jeggings

there are millions as of late, but the one that got me fucking riled was: jude law wears incredibly ghey tshirts- with neckline appearing to reach navel area????????????? apparently to show off chest? this style is being increasingly adopted....

what do the media refer to it as

He-vage

male cleavage

is it not bad enough we are turning into illiterate fools with txt spk, without ths shit also.

(another rant- i pay a stupid amount of money for nursery, my daughter has a diary documenting what she has been doing for that day- ie capturing for me really important stuff- milestones if you will. I read the diary and it is written in fucking txt spk!!!!!! and some of the grammar is just atrocious - she done really well today? it seems i am paying for a moron to look after her)

I like the word shpants. A friend of mine made it up about 8 years ago and it's (of course) a merging of shorts and pants.

Teachers know very little matey, that's why we're in the shite. Grammer, spelling etc., is no longer considered important - look at Max for proof!

I'm 21, so probably what you'd consider to be the 'younger generation,' yet my grammar and spelling is very good.

Having studied English Language at A-level, I found it quite interesting as we studied how the English language had developed over time and how it is continuing to develop, i.e, txt speak, email, the interweb, etc. By the way, if any of you have kids that are approaching the A-level age, try and get them to do English Language as an A-level. I'd say it's probably one of the few A-levels worth doing, as it actually gets you to think, as opposed to learn information and then regurgitate it.

Now that you all think I'm a nerd, just wondering what people's opinions on txt speak, lack of grammar, etc are?

I have mixed feelings myself. On one hand, I think you should know how to spell (or at least make an attempt at spelling properly) and use proper grammar, as it can make people take your points more seriously. On the other hand, I think for the message being conveyed by the words can be more important than how that message is delivered. For example, on various BB forums I've seen some great advice being given out by great bodybuilders, but they can't spell or punctuate for shit! This however doesn't take away from the fact that what they're saying is valuable information.

so the point of you doing a language has been devalued, as long as you can convey yourself properly, irrespective of whether your grammar or spelling is crap?

i wonder why 5yr olds can now pass gcse's :-)

No, but spelling 'properly' and using correct grammar isn't the be all and end all of writing. The primary function of writing is communication, so I'd say bad spelling and poor grammar becomes a problem when the poor spelling and grammar means the message cannot be understood. Now I'm not encouraging the use of shit spelling and poor grammar, but some people just can't spell or use grammar properly, for whatever reason (dyslexia, etc) and in this cases, the message being delivered is more important than how it is delivered.

In the workplace I think that is very much the case (depending on your role). There are some very technically capable people where I work, yet their e-mails are full of shit grammar and spelling. I don't even think it's a generational thing, more down to changes in what society deems important.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. Some people literally don't have a clue how to write properly. I work part time in a call center whilst I'm studying and most of the staff are quite young (under 25) and so many can't write proper sentences to save their lives.

Edit: I should also point out as part of the job you have to take statements from people over the phone and type them out. Also, to get the job you have to complete a basic spelling and grammar test, so I don't even know how most of dem got da job dohhhhh!

If you're a professional, no one will take you seriously if you cannot spell, or put together a gramatically correct letter, so this does count.

I also agree with Roadz that English is a growing language, unlike French which is dying due to their draconian language laws which forbids many Anglicised words from being used. However, one must still abide by the basic tenets of the language.

I quite like the word 'fucktard' - it seems very fitting for quite a few people I know.

I don't at all mind text talk and abbreviations and odd portmanteau words (i think that's what they are called) in general or informal chat, but in an official or work environment it's better to have complete clarity with what's written... doesn't look good when you get a professional document from someone and it has poor grammar and spelling.
