Martial Arts, Powerlifting and Recovery!!

Postby Matt on Thu Jan 08, 2009 12:42 am

Ive just started doing some Martial Arts. So far I go 4x a week and have changed to training once a week so not to over train, my plan is like this atm.

Monday- Squat, Bench, Rack Deadlift
Tuesday- Jujitsu & Weapon Aikido
Wednesday- Jujitsu
Thursday- Aikido
Friday- Off
Saturday- Off
Sunday- Brazillian Jujitsu

I am feeling pain in places I never knew I had muscle before

I dont want my training to suffer though, at the moment the Aikido isnt taxing at all, its just wrist chockes & holds but the jujitsu is fecking nakering. Im also changing to a low carb diet as well as i'll get more protein in then if I was on a high carb (trying to drop the 3kg I have gained since last week hehe).

Is there anything else I can do to help recovery?
If you're not sure if you're getting quality sleep or not, this is your standard: You should always wake up under a teepee. If you don't have a boner so solid you have to do a handstand to take a morning piss, your Testosterone levels are probably low.

What's the thinking with the low carb diet Matt? You are not exactly in need of shedding any weight...

To be honest, I just want to get rid of the 3kg I've put on since last Monay, I wanna get back down to around 75-77 instead of the 80-81 im at now.

Three kg's... i reckon you could work that off without the need for an extreme diet change, and the martial arts routine you've got there looks pretty cardio anyway.

By the way, how are you finding the ju jitsu? Would love to give that a go at some point...

I'd agree with that - Most martial arts is a combination of endurance interposed with bouts of intense activity - So you should be burning off calories like there's no tomorrow without changing your diet - I know I did when I did judo - I was probably in my best shape ever then :(

hehe in due time Max!!! we dont all want to be hunky sex gods like your self..

Fair points, I might change back then.. uhrm, this is a gud excuse to eat the apple pie in the fridge 8-) :?

Jujitsu is really really good fun, its so technical and if you get into the right state of mind it just runs so smoothly if feels really good when you perform some of the techniques because it just all fits together so well (which for me is very important). I do recommend it, it is great fun.

Edit: And fock me its nakering..

I did a bit at Uni and really enjoyed it. The only thing I dislike about Martial Arts in general is the whole grading thing where they pretty much forced you into it where I wasn't interested in that aspect.

How comes you opted for aikido? I found it to be sooooooo boring. I spent about 4 months just learning footwork. I could have taken up ballet for that.

You ever tried Krav maga? Now that is fun, plus Alex there is no grading system. Always a plus

Yeah I am only doing Aikido to stengthen my wrists up for when im squatting heavier weights and benching. I have a deal with the sensei, I give him £10 a week and I can do as many classes as I want and come in and train with people when classes arent on, its normally a £10 tenner per session.

As far as im aware Krav Maga is pressure points isnt it? I did actually look around for people that did it before I started BJJ.

I am really interesting in fighting when I turn 18, my dad said he'd sponsor me :D wooooooooo

I can imagine the advert now..

If you can find a club near you, I recommend trying out kempo (not kendo, that's hitting each other with sticks, not quite as useful if you're being mugged :D). Pressure points (used for healing too, can pick up some good massage tips ;)), wrist-locks etc, and some fairly robust sparring to get the blood pumping. I try and pop along to my friend's dojo whenever I'm up in London, great teacher and a lovely atmosphere.

Of course, if you're planning on going the MMA route, then there's nothing better than actually training MMA. ;)

Krav maga is what the israili special forces use. Its designed to deal with everyday situation's. Damn good imo.

If you are starting oly lifting then i would try to get in contact with Del Mcqueen if i were you. No one else in this country could give better advice seeing as he is a former commonwealth champion.
