well it's kind of irrelevant that he did it double overhand since he used straps (not really a feat of grip strength even though as all strongmen do kevin has awesome grip sterength) but i agree mixed grip is lame and hook grip solves it if you aren't allowed straps.

Why is mixed grip considered "lame"? Not picking a fight, just genuinely interested. :)

Have to admit I'm really starting to like hook grip, feels better than overhand.

Will I think one of the biggest problems with mixed grip is that you need to alternate which hand does what, yet it's very easy (or was for me) to forget to alternate the hands. :D

From what I've seen, most people don't change hands and do their mixed grip the same way round all the time - OK for PLers I guess but probably not so good for BBers as it's bound to lead to assymmetry.

Fair comment. However I seem to remember to swap hands, especially on heavy DLs I need to as it's a relief for the hands!

I dont swap hands but only used mix when i know my grip will start to struggle around 160-180kg or so.

I make sure i do all my support work like rack pulls and shrugs with double overhand though, with straps if neccesary.

Mixed grip is good for lifting heavy stuff. I like lifting heavy stuff, so I use mixed grip. Can't get myself to try hook, I think it'd a) fuck my hans up and b) hurt like hell.

The Rilla speaks...and speaks..and speaks

Btw I use straps for BORS, & shrugs normally - Why waste my grip on them!

That one handed dead looks hard - very impressive

Hitched deadlifts count in strongman. Silly rule IMO it seems likely to lead to people rounding excessively off the floor and hitching the lift to finish damaging their backs in the process.

Weird on that video it looks like mariusz is wearing a squat suit whilst nee isn't! Although wouldn't make much difference on deads from that height anyway.

My hands are just not big enough to make the hook grip comfortable or tbh even possible. I do however, hook with my thumb over my index finger; a reverse hook grip if you like. For me this works fine and allows me to lift more than standard overhead closed grip.

Mixed grip definitely is better for lifting heavy. I tend to use it for 3RM or below... or if I do 10 reps of more for RDLs.

Kevin was probably wearing briefs or some sort of equipment under his clothes. It wouldn't make sense not to, even though they probably don't get a lot out of them. I wonder if anyone has ever tried hooking the Hurcules Hold.

does it matter if its hook or reverse? does it make you less strong if you use either?

Grips in order of increasing strength

Double Reverse (Palms Facing)
Double Overhand
Mixed Grip
* Double Overhand Hook

* Double Overhand Hook is ONLY stronger if you can master it.

Mixed Grip poses the risk of a bicep rupture. DON'T VIEW THIS if you are eating...

It seems most people can lift more when using mixed/reverse grip. So yes, it matters.
kp1512 wrote:does it make you less strong if you use either?
No, not for your own personal training. But if it's a competition then yes, using a grip that results in less weight lifted by you does make you less strong for that event.

I would say that for those that don't lift in competitions, PLers, then use the overhand (hook or normal) grip as much as possible, since it will hit your back/arms more too, as well as reducing the risk of tearing a bicep, plus it's better for symmetry. BUT vary it; depending on RM aimed for and also cos variation is the key to success.

I suspect KP's questions were rhetorical.

Back to Nee - he is awesome tbh, a force to be reckoned with if he can continue for a few more years.
He really tries in every event, to the point of pure physical exhaustion.
