joint hypermobility syndrome

Postby GymBunny on Wed Sep 10, 2008 12:32 pm

OK, I have joint hypermobility syndrome (as it is currently called) of my knees and elbows. I'll post pics soon so you can see what I mean and this is seriously limiting me on things like flys.
I've just been trying to work on building up the muscle and being very careful with form. But, my parents are visiting me at the moment and my mum, who has the same hypermobility, has just been told at the age of 57, that she needs a knee replacement as this hypermobility has resulted in an osteogrowth and tearing of the miniscus (sp?) in her knee because the joint moves so much it has collapsed inwards.
Obviously I don't want this sort of thing to happen to me so everything I can do to protect the joints the better.

Help? Advice?

You have my sympathy.

Due to various injuries, my shoulders don't have much in the way on tendon support, but since undertaking RC exercises every day, my supporting muscles have increase in strength to the point where the tendon issue is no longer a severe problem.

From this, I would assume that it could be possible to increase strength in other muscle groups to improve your problem. I'd also suggest making use neoprene supports to keep the joints stable, but on in tandem with exercises which help support the knee and elbow.

Just had a read up on tinternet

Thats terrible !

From what I read you need to exercise more than most to build muscle because of the joints - but the joints might stop you training ? Is that right ?

tis great you are doing these RC exercises. However, I wouldn't do them everyday. They are no different to other muscles and need recovery. Probably once every 5 days is enough. And perhaps do one or two sets as warmups for say any type of presses.
