1) is there a charge for currency conversion from £ to $ imposed by bank?
2) is it worth placing a big order and get stung once by hrmc
3) is it worth placing single orders less than $18 to avoid paying duty?

if you use USPS [if you can] then you have a chance not to be stung ALL the rest you WILL get stung now.

1) rate has always been fair for me

2) probably. Only vat on value up to 125 quid including postage.

3) best to risk multiple orders up to the airmail ceiling. Usually got a 50/50 chance of not getting stung. Post office will sting you an 8 quid handling charge if they hit you with customs.

All things considered i'd do option 2. Takes 3 days with dhl and no uk side charges other than vat.
