I want to compete in PL

Postby burningnun on Mon Mar 17, 2008 8:34 pm

I want to compete in powerlifting sometime soon. My PBs are:
Squat: 110 x 5
Deadlift: 160 x 1
Bench: unknown, but probably not spectacular.

I would probably compete in the 67.5 kg or 75 kg weight class

What would be minimum lifts to shoot for before competing to avoid embarrassing myself? I'm not concerned with winning, just competing because TBH I'm a competitive person but for various reasons I never really compete in sports. How much difference is there between the two weight classes? Last question, how do I find a meet near me?

Sounds like you have the same idea as me mate, i just want to be a part of a competative sport again, no aspirations of being a champ, just want to be a part of it :)

Are you looking to compete equipped or raw?

have a look here

http://www.british-barbell.co.uk/britis ... Totals.htm

Going by that looks like youd need totals of 420-480 or so depending on weight class. So taking a rough guess that your squat 1rm PB is 130/140, your dead you know as 160 and your bench.. 100ish? Youll be 120kg short at the mo, which sounds like a lot but once you start seriously squatting and deadlifting youll add 100kg between them fairly quickly.

I need 600kg before ill even think about competing, which at 250kg deadlift, 120kg bench and 180kg squat (got 190 but wrapped which isnt allowed unequipped) leaves me 50kg short (and 5kg too heavy BW wise at the mo :) )

check out powerliftinguk.com for details of meets, just be aware that Curt and MJwild post there :D

Ive never actually competed myself btw, but a few on here have so they will have more details.

That sounds pretty cool,

One of the guys at my gym recently stopped Rugby cuz of knee problesm and is considering taking up powerlifting, and he recently completed a 255kg squat, and 255kg deadlift, (go figure on the knee probs  ), and he is natural.

You should post a journal and get motivated, the best step is the first step ain't it.

Definitely raw. I don't want to have to learn how to use suits and whatnot, since they are expensive and I would rather continue to train for other sports than solely for PL'ing, so all my training will be raw. I don't even use a belt at the moment, which would obviously change if I started powerlifting.

My bench is almost certainly less than that, and I think my novice gains are all but used up, so adding 120 will be a bit of a slog. I'm 18 if that makes any difference.

Equipped seems to split U20 and U23, but ive not noticed Unequipped split anything but Senior then the Masters cats (again an experienced competitor like Fletch or Richard may be able to shed more light)

For your age they are definately solid lifts mate, as for the newbie gains, youll be amazed at how much poundage you put on your lifts once you train specifically to up them.

Thanks for all the help mate. I was wondering what M1, M2, M3, M4 meant. Any idea if that's anything to do with age groups?

Hopefully one of the Pl'ers sees this thread.

Thanks. I just tried benching a few singles (first time in a while) and got 75 kg paused, which I'm actually quite pleased with. I don't really like bench pressing, but singles seem a bit more fun.

the totals arnt as high as mark said, they were senior totals..

If you compete in bwla (which i would probably advise), the qualfiying totals for the national champs EQUIPPED is 380kg at 67.5's and 420 at 75's for U20's.

Im not really sure how you go about competing and joining BWLA because i don't compete with them (althought i might next year). You will have to search for their website.

And its all about going out and hitting PB's, and in all fairness i think your squat and deadlift looks pretty good, get competing.

p.s People who run bwla are bunch of boring miserable old bastads though. Great lot of lifters though.

Thanks for posting Ash. Any ideas about raw lifting in the BWLA? Those totals are pretty low though, presumably I wouldn't be penalised for doing bench and deadlift unequipped and just using wraps for squatting. Assuming my squat 1RM is 120 my total now is 355 so that's pretty encouraging.

burningnun- i wouldnt worry about bwla qualfiying totals for juniors/teens, they tend to be pretty easily obtainable, i wouldnt worry about it, your lifts are definetly good enough, trust me. Its those damn BPC totals that are the bastads lol.

KP- A powerlifting comp consists of squat bench and deadlift, however there are sometimes bench only competition, bench and deadlift only (push and pull) comps.

:?

I'm pretty interested in this too mate.

The 67.5KG qualifying total for Juniors or U23 is 270KG.

I'm probably around 64KG now and i've never trained for strength, my 1RM totals would definitely be higher than that. I'm writing a new post as we speak about help with a strength routine, although i'm mainly interested in my physique and this is hardly the time of year to take up a strength routine......
