I Dont Get it

So Tesco is now looking to backfill roles from Slovakia as they say Brits are shunning the roles

Speaking to a few of the couriers that BSD uses - 3 of the main guys are Polish or are about to be replaced. Why? As they couldnt get brits to do the roles.DPD for example is now moving to a Franchise role and you can make a very good living if you take on [anything from 400gbp to 1000gbp per week depending on drops]

I dont get it. Why wouldnt you want to work in Tesco or Courier if you havent got a job?

Both offer good scope and pay relatively well.

My Brother In Law owns a chain of GameStation-esque retail outlets - he now has to hire europeans as his experience in Brits hasnt been the best and many arent applying.

Have we created a system which really doesnt encourage ppl to get off there fat asses ?

We dont really have a working class as we dont make a great deal any more .

We do have an underclass who have never worked and see no reason to do so . Generations of families who sponge and expect everything to be given too them .

Good point GP - i think also that fact that you can still be off work and make a decent living from handouts is probably also the other aspect.

It is sick how some people in this country live very comfortable lives and have luxuries - yet they don't work and achieve all of this on state handouts. Now, if they done the same in other countries, they'd be homless and hungry. I really think our government helps too much and wastes too much money on these people.

Sometimes it makes you think what's the point in working when these people sit on their arses and get stuff handed to them on a plate.

IMO, benefits should be the bare minimum for survival - there should be no room for luxuries, otherwise there's no incentive for people to get off them and start working.

A social system that looks after the scum is to prevent a revolution. It makes no difference to the super rich but the hard workers in between pay for it all.

What really bothers me right now is the current £2.2bn surplass in the benefit system. Given that the population is about 60million and not all will be getting benefit or tax relief/credits, I struggle to see how there's such a huge number involved. Per head thats a huge number who would receive benefit but not everyone is so where exactly is it all going?

Rab - i am not sure. I think its people being lazy and not wanting to have to commit to a job and work for someone for money. Granted - this is a minority relatively speaking but the numbers are ever increasing.

As I was saying - IT Industry is seriously lacking skills right now - we have had 50% less people join over the past 5 years and its now go to the point where we have to look for roles outside of the UK

I know people who would happily fill these roles though. So that does lead me to think that its a money thing....cost of living meing much higher down south and it not being worth your while the same?

Who wants to work in London? Not me and not for a lot of money either. Certainly wouldn't live there and with a commute you have no home life so having a big wage is pretty pointless if you can't get the time to enjoy it.

interesting you say that.

But you can work in london and just live 20-30 mins away for a decent enough cost.

Funny thing - guy where i was had moved form Wales to West London for a job. His Mrs was moving over and they were looking to see where to live. So he says he has £1500 a month budget and he thought that was small.

For 1500 a month you can get some bloody good places with short commutes......its just about looking

Yeah but 20-30 mins commute is still too close and still very busy and will be by train. Besides thats not including time travelling to and from train stations at either end.

Not for me. London puts years on you. You can the stress, up and down lifestyle that poeple have despite saying it's great. I don't believe a word of it to be honest unless you're earning top money at which point material life is all of interest anyway. If the same money could be made in quieter areas then I'm sure most would take it.

I dont know man - there is buzz that I certainly miss when I am not in London and I enjoy that vibe and buzz.

Hard to say why - buts its just nice in terms of it being fast paced.

downside - alot of attitude, arrogance and rudeness

I'm probably too laid back for that. I don't mind being busy with work but I draw the line at it taking over my life and London cetainly does that to you without much trouble. If you're your own boss then the situation is different.

I really don't miss the commute into London - It would take some very very serious money to tempt me back in - I'm talking seriously well into 6 figures! - If the basic started with a 2 I might do it lol - Just the thought of it makes me cringe.

Slough may be a dive but a 30 minute drive - door to door - is so much more bearable even if I'm earning maybe 1/3 (ok slightly more but not much) of what I was my work/life balance is so much better atm 8-)

Frankly I love living in London. There are obviously downsides and working hours tend to be longer - but the flipside is that there are better opportunities and you earn more. My commute is 35 minutes door to door, and surely getting on a train is so much less stressful than driving? I'm going to start cycling in from next month when my bike comes and that will bring my commute time down even further.

Not sure I'll want to be here forever but right now it's awesome. As KP says there is a buzz about the place and there's an intangible feeling that you're on the doorstep of absolutely everything. At the moment, if I was going to be elsewhere, I'd go abroad.

Ollie - I do understand I loved it when I was in my twenties - But once the family came along you start noticing all the downsides of being in London a lot more and do not have the spare time to enjoy the good bits so it just becomes a chore unfortunately.

Enjoy it while you can 8-)
