Home office launhed this 300k initiative for crimes in your post code

Not bad - my only question is the classification of crime now.

But an eye opener in terms of what is going on in your area

^^ yeah, I didn't expect it to work in NI (or Scotland) anyway. I did try an English postcode. Must just be overloaded.

I spend my life looking at figures which are either wrong , been bent , need to be viewed whilst squinting .
Crime classifications are misleading and where they were reported doesnt mean they happened there
Ive not been on the site but I'd take it with a pinch of salt

Give it some time and you'll see house prices flucuating like crazy based on this.

In fact I'll predict right now that sites like Rightmove will have links to this for "viewing crime in this area" for the property you're looking at before too long.

hmm not sure Alex - didnt upmystreet have crime data as well? that didnt make much of a diff

I think this will be an online fad this week.....because

- it doesnt actually say where and when it happened
- 6 catergories of crime is no where near enough
- reporting crimes +1 in arrears is pointless

Now if they had this live or near live - say T+4 hours and expanded the crime category that would work, and could be easy. If I am not mistaken all crime that is reported is fed into a common system and that would pretty easily be reported to an external source and presented on the web

this had/has alot of potential if people would apply common sense

^^ did think of something similar for people that use mobiles when driving...but it opens up a legal issue on taking images of people and human rights - as bizarre as that sounds.

Wrong mate, you can take photos of anyone outside iof their own property as it's considered the public domain. There are some restrictions, but the likelihood of the CPS being interested in someone driving is nil, unless there's a major injury or death involved

Simon - not really sure tbh - UK and EU and Human Rights

Its similar to CCTV - you cannot have CCTV in or around your property without a sign.

The point on people using Mobiles - is 3 Points and Fine - they could do that off a image. Wouldnt be CPS but Police ?

Human rights act protects  you against actions of the state . An individual cannot infringe your human rights unless they do so as part of their duties as a state employee

A lot of crime is committed by chavs on chavs . The sort of people who cannot raise their kids properly and then ring the cops to sort them out when they " go off the rails " even theough there was never any rails
Its rare I go into a nice area and decent people in decent areas rarely see the cops .

The problem with this site is , once we have elected chiefs , will they be asking cops to flood into these " high crime areas ?" The result will be that decent people see cops even more rarely despite being the taxpayers who pay for this service

Its always seemed odd to me that the ones who pay nothing place the highest demands on our public services

I also saw a comment that as the site goes by post codes it's not necesarrily giving the proper info for any particular street - the postcode refers you to a street but the crimes relate to that postcode which coudl cover a larger area in some cases
