Have been overdosing on Magnesium

Postby Richard on Mon May 17, 2010 2:09 am

For some reason I thought a teaspoon would be about 2g of Mag citrate. I just weighed it & it is about 9.5g. Have been doing this for a week - was feeling a bit odd but thought it was just because I havent been eating much.

Should I go to the doc & get checked out?

Shitting like an elephant, usually.

I think in extreme cases it can cause low BP or kidney failure but I'm OK - felt a bit odd yesterday, but that might be lack of food. BP was 116/69 this morning, so that's OK.

The kidney is incredibly effective at excreting magnesium, it's very rare that hypermagnesemia occurs and generally only in kidney failure. I hope that's right, otherwise I've majorly screwed up on one of the questions in a clinical biochemistry exam i had last week.
