Went to try out the jjb gym at wigan yesterday - seriously impressed with the set up and all for £28 a month !

Anyway I was doing some lat raises and when I dropped the db I felt a twang in my back and all my lower back went into spasm !!

Im still in agony and now cant train AGAIN because of injury - gutted !!!

Have now joined the "exclusive " injury list :(

Thursday 20th March

Went to the Osteopath . Best £25 Ive ever spent .

I have muscle damage to my lower back . No damage to discs etc which is good news

He asked a lot of questions about my training and what exercises I did .

The problem appears to be my spine which is naturally curved . This means that any exercise stood/sat up puts my spine under undue stress and results in risk of injury . He advised me never to do sit ups and never never ever to do squats or standing calf raises !!

He basically said I had built a lot of bulky muscle without stamina or function . No sure if that was an insult or not.

It now needs a week or so to heal and hes stopped the muscle guarding .

Think Im going have to revamp the training and read Mens Health instead of MD .

I would recommend everyone going to see an osteopath even if they are not injuried just to have their spine etc examined

Yes core weaker than other larger muscles .

The main advantage of the visit was the explanation of why I find squats hard on my back and which exercises to avoid .
Unfortunately I am likely to get injured easily by squats , deads and anything that either presses down on the spine or may cause me to overextend . Any poor form is over emphasised by the curvature of my spine .

He also advised loads of vit c - forgot to ask why !

Dunno

Join a Gym to use a leg press or do high reps squats at home

Just going to sort out the injury for now Rab

You may find sissy squats or squats/lunges using DB's of use over a BB.

Weighted Plyometrics (although you may want to start with just body weight initially) will also hit legs while the balance required will help build a good core. And it's HIIT nature will aid fat loss.

Tues 25th March

What a shit week . Depressed as I cant train and easter eggs everywhere - the diet went pear shaped

Anyway 1 hrs cardio ( power walking ) on Monday after being motivated by Vidals new picks and 1/2 hr stationary bike yesterday .

Yesterday also did some light 60 kg bench and some light cable curls both to failure on high reps . When I started I looked flat and like I had lost weight . However after 1/2 hr I pumped up like a balloon and looked back to normal - very odd !

No issues with the back so its back ( no pun intended) to training from today all be it lighter and higher reps for now .

Still going for size at the moment

My problem is that having been an ectomorph all my life Ive always ate like a horse . Now I can gain weight cos Ive got older , I cant stop eating like a horse and so ive gained some fat ! Bloody sods law !

So cardio for some fat burn and general health .

PS Think Ill put the " you might be training hard..but im training harder! " quote on my gym wall (next to a picture of Nicky Clarke )

20/4/08

Not updated this fo ages due to bloody DIY . I should have a bloody trade account at B&Q !

Anyway Injuries mostly gone and to avoid further I have been playing with volume

Today it was 10 sets of 70kg x 8 reps with 90 secs rest between sets ( incline press)

Then 10 sets of 20 kg x 12 reps with 90 secs rest between sets ( cable curls )

Just wanted to shock my muscles ans see what happens . I have to say that by set 7 you know whether your form is good and exactly where you are hitting cos your muscles are seriously fatigued .
It was a good cardio session as well , which is good as Ive been roped into rugby again ( league) when a masters tournament is held . Hope I can still play wing although at 16 ' 10 " I may have to move to centre

Now injury free !

Been training light with bench press and curls but nothing more

The bad injury turned into sciatica in my neck and back . Now the muscle spasming has stopped the nerve appears to have been released .

Anyway the bad news got on scales and im 16 2 , thats a loss of 8lbs during this injury . Seriously pissed off with that . Still some has been round the waist although I think most has been muscle loss and/or the fact that I stopped using mono when injured.

Time for some serious training to get back the lost weight
