First Cage Fight in July. Any other MA/fighting forms?

Postby Matt on Sun Feb 08, 2009 4:55 pm

A fellow came round to the dojo today asking the sensei if any fighters would be up for a 'fight night' at Winter Gardens (Blackpool).

It was arranged to be some where around July 4th, fighters get between £800-£1000 for fighting (I still think it is being discussed but thats the range which was given so far).

At the moment I am doing;

Brazilian Jiujitsu- Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and i'll come in for an hour or two with another trainee just to practise techniques and have a roll on a random day.
Kicking Boxing- Sunday

They are also doing Kick Boxing on a wednesday before the BJJ (I think) so I plan to do that, or it might be Mui Thai (sp?).

I want to get a broad spectrum of MMA so does any one have any other ideas or what other martial arts or fighting forms I could do?

I have a deal with the dojo sensei (im dating his daughter) which is why I can go so many times a week without paying as much as all the others.

Cheers guys.

BJJ and KB are a pretty decent combo for MMA. Most fights are won on the ground, so I'd concentrate on the BJJ as you're doing. Don't ignore striking though, need to be well-rounded. TBH, while there are other techniques that might add something, I wouldn't train more than a couple of styles for a couple of years at least, concentrate on getting them up to scratch first.
Are there any schools that specifically train MMA?

Cardio and explosive lifts are also important to train, but you seem fairly fit already, so probably don't need to worry too much about that if you're training 4 sessions a week.

Good luck. :)

First of all, you need to be nucking futs. You need to not give a rat's ass. You need to feel dangerous. That my young padawan will do you more good than any MA. At least at this point.
You've only trained for less than a month and don't exactly strike me as a determined/psycho kind of guy. If I were you I'd consider putting it off at least a couple of years.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to step into the cage without a solid couple of years MA experience minimum. At least you're young and springy, so should hopefully heal from the injuries. :D

Good luck dude, I'd agree with rilla here, crazy beats big everytime. You really need to have the desire to hurt this guy beyond recognition and not give a turd what punishment your body takes.

Also I would not like to bugger up that relationship or you'll be in for a world of pain!

I get the impression ground work is where it's won too. Ground work is incredibly hard, and if you don't have a lot of experience under your belt (Black would be good!), your groundwork is going to be so nobby compared to people who've been doing it for any time, you'll be armlocked or strangled before you can say knife.

I've done a lot of judo and good groundwork players will get you in absolutely no time - Also they're very good at completely knackering you by using their weight to full advantage.

Do you do much groundwork? If not you're going to die young :D

I agree with Rilla that I completely misjudged you and you do sound like you've got the "thirst". You'll do well.

Well BJJ = groundwork, hence why it's good for MMA. A lot of good BJJ fighters have gone on to do well in the cage.
I still think Matt'll get steamrollered by a more experienced guy, but it'll be a learning experience at least.

Ader- I do BJJ 4x a week and Kick Boxing 2x a week. I train with a guy who's around 92kg. He is alot better then me but recently I have started getting him to tap as he tends to wait to tap meaning he gets injured a bit and its catching up on him (he's polish, got a amazing full beard lol)

I know im going to get steamrolled but its the other way to learn to not get steamrolled the next time :)

I'm with KP on the sponsered Matt-A-Slap! its 3 roudns of 5 minutes :) gonna be a lot of happy slaps.

Matt, do you have any idea who else will be competing? So you can scope out potential competition?

What everyone is trying to nicely say is that you have only just started, you'd be up against blackbelts and people with a lot more experience. Whilst this might be a good way to learn, it will probably just be a demonstration in breaking parts of you, if you're lucky it might be bone that gets broken. If you aren't, well, let's just say that knees don't really heal very well.

I'm sure you are capable of getting riled up, but getting riled up and say, biting someone's ear off in a fight because you ride a demon are different things. For example, I would never ever ever in a million years want to piss Ben off, or Si come to that, whereas although I am sure Mark would wipe the floor with me I think he's not likely to utterly destroy me and everyone I hold dear. ;)

(No offense Mark....I'm banking on the fact I'm on the other side of the Channel to save me from retribution!)

Matt

Why don't you try something like judo for a bit and get your grading and do a comp or three, then go for some MMA stuff. Or do some boxing. I used to box when I was at school and it's really weird being punched for fun!
