good find
could be worth supplementing in supraphysiological doses to see what effects it has
i always thought the kelp thing was snake oil supplementation- obviously some grain of truth with the jap women suffering when adopting a western lifestyle

i'm sure its only beneficial (to supplement with kelp) if your thyroid is already a little slow. if it is not I dont think it will increase it any further

Don't have most of the info i downloaded when i had my thyroid problems but i do have this little list of foods that are suggested for people with thyroid issues. Most info i looked at at the time suggested that most of the foods claiming to actually raise TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) &thyroid function don't really work... the best bet to ensure optimum thyroid function is just to take foods that supply plenty of iodine.

Foods high in Iodine
Seaweeds (lato, kelp, nori, gamet, balbalulang)
Yogurt
Milk
Seafish
Seasalt

Foods that may marginally improve TSH output
Coconut
Avacado
Saturated fats

Herbs that may improve TSH output
Shilajeet (Asphaltum puniabiunum)
Kanchanara (Bauhinia veriegata)
Bladder wrack (Fucus vesiculosus)
Licorice

Foods the reduce iodine absorption (Goitrogens)
Cabbage
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Kale
Soy
Pine nuts
Peanuts
Millet
Strawberries
Pears
Peaches
Turnips

Also suggested to avoid excessive caffiene and refined sugars

To be honest though, i wouldn't worry about the goitogens unless your thyroid function is definitely lower than it should be or you know your diet is very deficient in Iodine and you can't be arsed to to increase it. For people with a balanced diet and normal thyroid health such foods are fine.

As I thought not really any need for iodine supplementation: http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/omd?iodine+excess

here is a map that shows which countries are deficient: http://www.iccidd.org/

The map shows the assumed % of households who have access to Iodised salt. There is no reference to deficiency.

It is assumed that if you have access to iodized salt or foods that contain high amounts of it, then you cannot be deficient. Of course you still could be, if you tried. It is also assumed that if your country doesnt produce iodized salt, and doesnt use it in foods much, that you may possibly be deficient. Of course you could not be too.
