Evening training...

Postby health4ni on Wed Nov 03, 2010 3:23 pm

... leaves me high as a kite for hours and I find it hard to get to sleep (esp as I tend to be asleep at least by 11pm).

What supps do people recommend for helping to calm down?

I was thinking BSD's ZMA with post-training shake (plus another later with evening meal).
PS will help, but expensive.

TIA

Might sound obvious, but a nice dose of carbs chills me out.

@Si: Yeah, seem to remember Gaba from years ago. And the wank isn't gonna happen at that time of the day lol

@Rab: useless lol :P

@KP: you train at 9pm then get up at 3am! Not much sleep. How do you survive?

@Karlos: that'll be the insulin spike & fall. I tend not to get that unless I eat a lot of white rice or potatoes

I see that MP do PS in powder form; prob the cheapest PS option. Magnesium may also work, but I don't wanna overload with the ZMA. Might try to double-drop (lol) the ZMA.

On a serious note mate. i sometimes have to train late and instead of rushing through a shower and all the nightly activities cooking up food.....i take time to relax in a bath..take 20 min in it and just shut your eyes and chill. light a candle save shitty bright artificial lights. take a wee minute...probably not easy with a baby

Sack the supplements.

I don't mean I get a rebound hypo. After a session they take me from 'high' to 'normal'...Perhaps a process of blunting cortisol or adrenaline, or shuttling tryptophan...but i guess it's irrelevant if you know it doesn't have the same effect on yourself.

Zinc at 25mg over the first 2 meals of the day and then 1g-2g magnesium around last meal or 30 mins pre bed.

fcuking with diurnal cortisol levels is asking for myther

@Rab: yes, used that before and it does help. a great natural way of doing it. The wee fella sleeps from 7pm'ish right through to 7am'ish anyway so it can be done. The wife might think I'm taking the pish though haha

@Karlos: ok, I see what you mean. I've just never really felt it work that way on me.

@Alex: That sounds like a protocol I used to use and recommended to you lol I just take ZMA now though.

@Jules: yeah, I don't wanna mess with it too much. Funnily enough I had some cottage cheese tonight! First time in a month I think haha

I think I'll give the ZMA a go like a mentioned for 3 evening sessions to see what happens and give it a test; as in I'll down one tab with my PWO drink. And then another with my meal (only on training days will I take 2).

hash.......... just need a few drags really, no need to get high. Failing that and it really is your best option, then go with magnesium but its a poor substitute.

are drugs still out of the window- or would you consider melatonin for a more restful nights sleep?
i have been where you are at- i used to do the night feeds to alleviate some of the workload, so only real way for me to get some quality zzz time was melatonin

have you tested any levels recently- i wouldnt tinker with cortisol if e2 levels are already low.

Hard to get over here though isn't it?

To be honest my sleep has been very good since his colic stopped 5 months ago. It's purely down to me being too alert after an evening training session. I used to train in the early evening (4-6) for a year or so for 50% of the time and all was ok. Just seems the past couple of months that whenever I train at that kind of time I sleep very badly. The extra liquid from peri-training shakes doesn't help either so I'll look at that; prob just do a pre and eat solid food when I get home (or just a post if training clients after).

With my current schedule of looking after Finn training days end up being Sat & Sun for sure then perhaps one other day. Not ideal so I nee to change. Plus I'm gonna use a different training prog (actually gonna try 5/3/1 for at least 3 months and hopefully longer) so it's best to have more training day options.

Thanks for the advice chaps. I'll let everyone know how I get on in a few weeks time.

Could try Arnica pre bed on an empty stomach as has been known to work. I have tried myself with some success.

Think you may have identified the cause with workout shakes. I assume you use amino acids and some carbs?

No aminos; not for 18months now.

Pre is either
10g pea & 10g rice with 20g carbs + creatine + alcar + beta alanine
or same without pea & rice or carbs if I've eaten recently.

Post is 15-20g pea & 15-20g rice + carbs + creatine + taurine

Thanks for the arnica suggestion, I'll have a research into it.

as previously mentioned, i met a complementary therapist last year and she mentioned she was going to the states, and i said cool, at least you can go into a walgreens (supermarket/chemist) and get some melatonin to sort you out straight away.

she said no way- arnica is the way forward, most people use it for bruising etc, but she said really useful in stress situations, and she said jet lag is a form of stress to the body???

whether it works or not i couldnt tell you- i aint posh enough to go long haul, i just found it pretty interesting

mmm seems arnica pillules are dead cheap and available from Boots so may give these a go after the ZMA PWO trial.

Cheers
