Elevated heels for squats

Postby Rilla on Wed Jul 30, 2008 5:23 pm

I've recently found out that if I elevated my heels about an inch, I can do close stance full squats, not the 3-4 inches below parallel I've been doing. Talking FULL squats.
'Would it be a good idea to buy a board or something and stick it in my gym back for squats? :)

My shoes are elevated on the heel anyway as they are squat shoes, about 1/2 inch difference from toe.

just use small plates.

Most of my clients have to use them to get better form. tbh it's not the best but it's often due to calf tightness. You could try stretching the calf, PNF style with a seated calf raise machine, before squatting.

Is there any advantage mechanically in using a raised heal or is it simply to cover the flexibility deficiency?

..also does it have any adverse effect? I am assuming no? I used to have to use two small plates but dont need to now...but I never noticed any change....

As I understand it, it makes squatting a bit easier, I used to use plates a few years back when I first walked into a gym and had a PT for a week. My form was bloody awful and this helped.

My understanding of it is its not something to make a habbit of as it can cause imbalances. Read something about it along time ago and have never done this as a result

as I said it's not the way you want to be forever, but until the issues are corrected then I see no probs with it.

Luckily for me I don't need them. But as I say most people I train and indeed see do... and should use them when they don't.

It defo helps you go lower.

And also, a cyclist squat for example, is a raised heels, feet together front squat. Again, variation of an exercise is a good thing.

If you're serious about weight training (which everyone here is) and your feet have stopped growing, it makes sense to just invest in weightlifting or powerlifting shoes. Expensive Adidas ones cost about £75, but shipped from America you can get equally good shoes for about 75 USD. vsathletics is a good place to start, Google being your friend as I can't remember the exact URL.
