EAAs for running?

Postby Spit on Fri Jul 04, 2008 12:04 pm

I need to start training for the Bristol Half Marathon in September, but I'm really keen not to waste away while doing so. I'll keep up with the weights and also intend to play squash/ride my bike/climb as much as possible, with all that on my plate I think keeping DOMS to an absolute minimum would also be good news.

With those two factors in mind I was thinking about buying some EAAs- is this a good look, or would my money be better spent elsewhere? If I do go this route, when and how much would you recommend I supplement (bearing in mind I currently weigh about 70kgs, and don't anticipate that changing much over the summer)?

Hmm id be honest...it would work our expensive...Id try and get your protein from meats \ whey \ similar sources..if you are already doing that.....then maybe its something to think about....

I've just started summertraining for hoop, which means we play outside instead of in the gym. We usually end up playing for quite some time if the weather is nice, because it's fun and we don't have et times. Last night I played for 2½-3 hours and I expect some 3-4 hour sessions as the summer progresses (and if my back can take the punishment). Anyways, enough with the essay already, I'll get to my point. I load up a shaker with some 20-30g EAA/BCAA mix and some 50g carbs (and some of Scott's red magic powder - I should probably throw in some of my himalaya salt as well), and down it about halfway through. It's worked fine for me so far.
I also try to get some protein/carbs in before - usually 2 scoops of MPC, one scoop whey and some oats.

Hope that helps.

Cheers for the feedback boys- you may be right about the cost KP, I haven't really done the maths yet, but if I'm just necking EAAs before each run (which I anticipate being about twice a week) then I might be able to get away with it. We shall see...

Yes, good point twice a week..then it wouldnt be a big issue but everyday or 4-5 times...and itll get expensive.

Ask Hugh about it; he loves 'em for running.

I think EAAs would be great based on my experience in the gym and Hugh's running experience with them.

KP is right about cost, but you are a similar bodyweight to me and I've no dropped down to 12g pre/during training & 12g PWO (24g total); as opposed to 30g total. The research I've seen shows that 6g is the min needed. Plus it does need carbs with it; fruit juice for cheapness (say 100ml & then 300ml water + good salt). Or add 10-20g WMS.

Damn, I'm being told that I'm 'not authorised' to read h4ni's link, despite the fact I've seen the thread before! Could a friendly passing mod tell Skynet to look the other way please?
