Deadlift Conversion

Postby Coop_de_Ville on Thu Oct 22, 2009 10:55 am

I have been using the trap bar for my deadlifts for the last few months and I have decided to switch back to barbell as when I am away on season there is always going to be a normal bar and most probably not going to be a diamond/trap bar.
Anyway I switched the other day and had to drop a good 20kg. I was working on keeping a proper form and not letting any hitching occur so that may be a reason but will this conventional deadlift put emphasis on different muscle groups?

I woudl think the main difference is the bar is going to be in front of you so leverage is not so good. This will also mean you have to use your posterior chain much more than when using the trap bar. With the trap bar you can use your quads more. Anyway that's my take on it.

20Kg drop sounds about right- 'they' reckon evry inch in front is like having an extra 10Kg on the bar.

Could be that grip plays a part too? Even if you're using a mix grip for barbell deads then I still think the neutral grip used for the trap bar is a lot more secure.

Conv deads harder on the core too. Mixing it up is always good anyway, don't worry bout it.

I agree, I'd get the trap bar work in while you can. I love trap bars!
