Completely lost motivation

Postby Will on Tue Jan 25, 2011 7:38 pm

Hey all.

I've completely lost any drive for the gym at the moment. I just cannot be bothered to go. I'm tired, busy, and by the time I get home I just really can't face the gym. It's lost it's appeal completely at the moment. :(

Any of you ever suffer from that? If so how the heck do you snap out of it? As I'm starting to get annoyed and upset at myself that I'm not training. I feel weak and skinny too! :(

I guess I've lost a motivation too as I don't have a training partner, and feel that I'm not really getting anywhere any more. I've plateaued and cannot be bothered to push myself anymore.

Please tell me this is just a phase and I'll get back to it soon! The thought of having to lift weights and/or my bodyweight at the moment makes me feel completely drained!

I'm rather upset at my laziness. :(

How long have you had off? Sometimes a total switch up is what you need. Do some intervals at the pool if you've got access. Any intense activity will bring you rush of adrenaline and endorphins which will make you feel good. It might take up to as long as 6 weeks to get your mojo back. I'd just advise to not go totally sedentary. :)

Well I've done the odd bit of training here and there, but literally one day a week on average at the moment. I haven't trained for about a week so far, and just do not have the inclination to do so. I haven't been sleeping well so by the time evening comes around i'm knackered which doesn't help. I just feel completely unmotivated! I haven't trained with vigour or regularly following a program for about 2 months, just sporadic on and off training.

It's worrying me because normally I'm chomping at the bit for going to the gym - I'm worried I'm getting lazy and disenchanted.

Thing is my gym's really good, it's never too busy either. I'm just being a lazy arse. I hate it.

SInce Craig isnt posting much let me step into his shoes and suggest the answer lies in a 10ml bottle of testosterone which is complimented well with another 10ml bottle of nandralone deca

That will spice things up and give you some new life

I felt drain and Ill all through December, so I sympathise.

Perhaps you should just do the exercise you like the most and sod anything else until you feel more goal oriented?

Yeah it's just making the effort to actually want to get to the gym!

I'm sure I'll snap out of it. It's irritating though because I'm really wanting to get back into it, but my laziness is winning!

I know exactly what you mean Will. It really helps me if I have a specific target I'm training for, be it a bodyweight goal by a certain date, a target of a new PB on certain exercises, a time I want to make a certain run in etc... without something like that I find it hard to keep consistent or even motivated at all.

If I was an all out bodybuilder it would be easier as there's always something to improve, but for me training is always about a specific goal, usually more to do with improving some aspect of performance than physique nowadays.

Right now my priorities are all focused on getting money together for my next trip out to the US, so training is infrequent and basic.

Will and Det,

Interesting that you need specific goals to strive for.

I think that this is why so many sports people get fat and out of shape after they finish playing. They just have no "reason" to train anymore. I know I was like that years back after I stopped playing.

What I would say is that training without a goal should be more fun as yiou can just do what you like. What I've found is that just beating the log book is all I need.

Perhaps you should consider a martial art? I take my son to Tae Kwon Do which looks like great fun.

Just find something to do and fit in a ful body sesh a couple of time per week and you'll be a-okey!

Simon, yeah I think you aer right about what happen to many athletes after their competetive days are over. I'm pretty lucky in that respect in that my 'normal' way of eating and lifestlye without training is pretty healthy so i don't really turn into a slob, i just lose a bit of size and strength - the only difference for me in diet for example between training and not training is that when hitting the gym I eat a bit more. Pretty much always eat the same variety of foods. I always walk a lot, cycle a bit and keep pretty fit anyway, and dont even really count that as exercise.

Is funny you mention martial arts - just started doing fujian white crane kung fu! Is one of those stylised martial arts with somewhat funny looking movements, but its great, got the sticking hands/tight blocking stuff similar to wing chun, and some pretty explosive stuff with strikes aimed at your opponents weak angles... definitely keeps you fit too, and is as good as plyometrics anyday.

Will, I'd look for an alternative interest as Simon has mentioned as it seems you find just hitting the gym gets a bit stale after a while. I know Rugby is no go now for you but I find doing that when I can and getting out on the Mountain Bike helps break things up and is also good for CV.

I think you guys are spot on. It's a lack of goal, or training plan.

Maybe doing another sport/hobby would be good - the advantage of the gym however is that you don't need anyone else, though lacking a training partner I think has also hampered my progress. I think I'd probably do better if I could train with someone regularly.

Going for a bike ride is an idea - but I'd have to buy a bike! :D

I love rugby and miss playing it, but with work and so on it just kills my time and weekends :( I sound like whinging bitch making excuses now though!

As has been said maybe taking a bit of a break might help lessen my worry about it. However I'm concerned about not doing any activity!

I just don't like going to the gym sporadically without a plan or a goal - it feels like a waste of time.

Without sounding like a Wendler fan-boy I do think his 5/3/1 prog gives some really good, clear and achievable goals. Specifically, get stronger at 4 big exercises (deads, military press, squats and bench) then do what suits you with regards to assistance exercises. Def works well for those that like to achieve goals.

I have little time myself but I'm making an effort to at least do a training session in the week and try and get the odd game in once every 4-6 weeks, work permitting. You should come to training as it's on in Kingston so not too far for you.

This sentence implies that time is at a premium Will, i.e. you have other stuff on the go that you want to prioritise? If so and you're enjoying that stuff then I wouldn't give it a second thought, just do what makes you the happiest. If you feel like ignoring the gym completely then go for it, you will lose bugger-all strength and size and probably regain some enthusiasm for it at the same time; if that turns out not to be the case then you will have done yourself a favour by getting your priorities straight.

Perhaps - we have a lot on at the moment and with the redundancies I'm a lot busier, and we have a big project roll out for the next few months.

It'll calm down and I'll get back into it. I think I just needed to vent/share - thanks for listening guys. :)

Do Wendler 5/3/1.

Start out by ONLY DOING THE MAIN LIFTS (and an upper body pull), then add one assistance lift a month until you get to 3 assistance lifts. Keep it there for some time. You should be able to get in and out in less than 30 minutes to begin with and less than an hour with 3 assistance lifts.

I'll look into that 5/3/1 routine - thanks Rilla. :) I'm moving homes soon so it'll be a good thing to do once I've moved a good new start and all that.

Craig, the thought has crossed my mind a few times, but I just cannot even begin to imagine doing intramuscular injections - daft considering I've done subdermal ones (MT2).
