City Breaks

Postby Rab on Sat Sep 13, 2008 11:49 pm

Where do you's rate for a city break?

We have been to paris a few times and Amsterdam. I love Paris but i have been told we aint going back there as I have let her down twice and she couldnt face a third disappointment

I have a few places in mind...Barcelona, Rome and any of the biggies in Germany. I would also quite fancy Copenhagen so me and the Rilla could meet up for some fuuunnnn, but I hear it is very expensive up that end?????

Dublin is probably one of the best cities in Europe - but expensive. Lots to do in terms of night life and architecture.

Barca is massive.

And then getting in on with the Rilla...

Was gonna suggest Copenhagen. Supposedly one of the cooler cities of Europe. :)

barca for me- love that joint, especially now the port/beach area is done
venice- blown away- spritz drinks blow your head off
rome- overrated-coliseum is the bomb though
florence- lovely, worth a punt

just go wherever the budget airlines go and tripadvisor it, simple

Riga is good. If you're going with your girlfriend you can wonder round the shops looking at women whilst she's distracted :)

Barcelona's awesome - favourite city in Europe that I've been to.

Budapest is meant to be nice but Copenhagen is next on my list too.

Belfast - Lots to do and see and probably the friendliest people ive met

Paris - Dont stay in paris itself, stay just outside near a metro station, somewhere like v'al le malee chesye (sp) is nice as its easy to get into Paris and you can visit Disneyland if you like that sort of thing.

Palma Majorca - Again lots to see and you do a beach day if you want

Amsterdam i find a bit ruined by brits on stag do's but if you stay away from those sorts of areas its ok.

Berlin is one of my favorite German cities, but another superb one has to be Munich. I suppose this is true of everywhere, but all the major German cities are rather different from each other. Munich is classic Bavaria with Alpine influences, but it's also quite modern and sprawling too.

If you'll be traveling by train another addition to consider is Rothenburg. It's a small and perfectly preserved medieval town along the "Romantic Road". The trick to visiting there is to actually spend the night. Each morning, especially during summer, scores of buses pull in and offload tourists to poke around all day, but they are all gone by dinner time. If you take a train in in the afternoon you can see everything as the buses roll away and before they arrive the next morning, and the town itself couldn't be more charming at night.

If you want something more fun then a great city is Koln (Cologne). It has great architecture, a jaw-droppping Dom Cathedral, tons of parties, awesome beer, and the grassy banks along the Rhine river is packed with people relaxing on pleasant days. Oh yes, and there is chocolate museum, it is, in general filled with women drooling :D

Upsala in Sweden is a huge and sprawling city with a really cool mix of old architecture and modern fun. Only problem with Sweden is how expensive it is.

http://www.soultravelers3.com/ The guys who have done this trip have visited quite a few European countries and there are some interesting reviews of them.

Belfast isnt allot of fun if you are from the Glasgow area. All anyone asks you is which footbal team you support if you get me.

I stayed in an IBIS hotel Rue Cambronne when in Paris. Last time it was only 8 euros for two nights. Right next to the tube and a 10 min walk from the tower and we had a tower view aswell. Nice.

I'm trying to talk Fiona into Copenhagen or Berlin. She fancy's Barcelona or Prague more though.

Prague is a gorgeous city and there's something for everyone. Language is not so much of an issue as it is in Germany or Italy or France, because almost everyone speaks English. It's also very cheap and there is a huge variety of restaurants serving all sorts of food. (local stuff in particular is awesome)
Only thing to say is be aware of your things, mate of mine got her camera and phone lifted and she's careful about that sort of thing.

Oh yes and there are way fewer tourists between November and March

If you can afford it then Lake Como is also a must. Not city but lots of villages spread around the 150km of the lake. amazing scenary, food and bars/night life. Milan is around 90 mins drive.

We were near Menaggio I think it's called.

My old neighbour grew up in one of the villages there and is now the mayor. We're going out for my Dad's 65th next year. Went for his 60th and had a great time.

i think menaggio is further north- it is a lake itself?

if any of you guys do go- you can get rinsed for £50 to go to the villa carlotta on the lake- it is where daniel craig was convalescing after getting his balls smashed in.

i think my next city break is to bologna, prob not the ideal place to go for a fatty at the moment!
just hoping all the economy airlines dont go bump- i've been to a fair few places since the advent of cheap travel.

It's on the opposite side to Bellano.

Thats the only 6 star hotelin the world, I think. We looked around for free as my old neightbour's best friend is the manager there :)

Does NY count? Did a long weekend with the wife back in March.

Otherwise:
Munich - Lovely German city, loads of great places for beer (its almost Oktoberfest!) and some interesting sites (you will be amazed at how clean and efficient everything is)!

London - Yes, someone had to say it. there is loads going on in London, nice hotels, good shows (I recommend Wicked!). Ok its not the cheapest place, you could goto anywhere else in Europe for less than a weekend in London, but its worth it if you do it right :]

Mamma Mia will be tres ghey!

The 2 main chars in Wicked are great singers, really helps with the show. I was very suprised by how much I liked it tbh. It has made me look at The Wizard of Oz in a different light! Excellent story that is very well played out with subtle ties into Wiz of Oz (see if you can notice them!!) :]

Book early though and aim to be no further than half way back, but not too close as you end up lower than stage level.

The blonde is a stunner imo, she needed me inside her tbh.

Oh, if you want a nice hotel - radisson edwardian leicester sq. Don't book too early, about a week before you need to be there you will start to see deals popping up, about 4 days before you need the room there will be vat, breakfast and a decent room all bundled together, saving over £130 for a night usually. I've stayed there about 5 times this year and will continue to use the place.
I asked them to get me some flowers on checking in about 2pm, for breakfast the next morning. I completely forget after that point to tell them what flowers or when breakfast would be (so they were pretty screwed), when we got back to the hotel (after the show) I remembered, popped down to the night porter and after a few phone calls it became apparent the the lovely receptionist had ordered them anyway, a nice set of roses for about £30 and they were keeping chilled in the radisson hampshire about 30 metres away :D

Very good service.

Also, you have Casino at the Empire in Leic Sq, casinos now let you sign up and walk in on the same day (used to have to be 24 hours or something), so you can go in there for some drinks and a bit of light gambling, always fun for a girl on her bday. then take her back to the room and hope you both get lucky :p

taxi to victoria apollo is about £15 and about 15 mins depending on traffic, but if you are making a deal of it and dressing up, then its nicer than spending 20 mins on tubes getting hot and uncomfortable!

Wohoo!

Finally decided on what we are doing. We're going to Amsterdam at the end of Febuary/start of March for 3 nights. flights with easyjet are working out at £150 inc taxes etc fro the both of us. The hotle we stayed in the last time quoted me 70 quid per night so thats a pretty cheap weekend!

Im goign to book the flights tomorrow when i get paid and after that all i need to do is work on convincing her why a 3-some with a hooker would be good for our relationship.

I wanted to go to Copenhagen more than The Dam as The Rilla lives there and i could have met up with him to give a lifting lesson. It was working out too expensive though...almost the sam pp as the total cost of Amsterdam.

Ater that we are going to save up for a trip to New York, New York.
