Cardio twice a week good enough?

Postby Jake The Muss on Tue Sep 09, 2008 8:49 pm

Was trying to do 20-30 mins cardio every morning after weights, thing is it makes me late for work so i've had to drop it. I was thinking of doing 30-45 mins on a saturday and sunday morning, would this be good enough to help me lean up and improve stamina?

In a word "yes"

If you can add in some walking at lunch time as well, then it's all good.

Personally, I'd rather spread them out a bit one midweek and one at the weekend but I reckon 30-45mins is right - who's the lucky gal

Side note, if you're trying to get cut up, try tabata after your training, you can get a session of that down pretty quick or HIIT. I'd want an intensity session in there if it were me on a cut.

HIIT improves VO2 max better than cardio.

I'd recommend some HIIT sessions. They are great and only need to last 20-30mins. Maybe once every other week do some running just to get used to it, but tbh when would you ever run non-stop for with your children? You'd stop & start like footballers & rugby players do (as an example). So it's better in that respect to simulate the exercise ;)

Yeah tell me about it, I need to give up the fags and take my own advice... Worth mixing your cardio up a bit, you must be healthy enough with work and dog walking but the the intensity stuff improves your VO2 max (I'm wandering past my layman's intellect here) which will be a big help. Maybe Filth4NI can offer more on this

^^^^he already has

Scott, do you have an example of a HIIT session you'd recommend?

ATM i do hiit on the tread after my lower weights sessions, so twice a week. It's a good time to do it imo as you want be hacking into recovery time like if you were doing hiit between leg sessions.

I crank the treadmill up to 13-13 (incline-kmph) and sprint 30seconds, rest (jump on sides with belt still running) 1 minute for 6 sets. You want to feel nauseous by your 6th set. To increase intensity you can up the speed/incline, increase work period (up to 60s) or decrease rest periods. ATM im just working on maxing out my speed and incline.

Im sure H4NI will have something more useful to add, but this method is brutal and certainly does the job.
