Breakfast for early AM training

Postby Shicky on Wed Jul 08, 2009 12:58 pm

Currently working full time so only chance I have to train is before work, for those in full time employment I dunno how you do it!

Anyway had my first session before work today and frankly it was pretty crap, didnt feel rested but nutrition was at fault too. Just had porridge with nuts and raisins, a shake, some hemp oil - Good as I can prepare in zero time but I felt quite bloated the entire workout. Thing is I like to eat a big meal at breakfast but I dont have the time to cook it, eat it and train before work.

Essentially I was thinking I need to prep my brekky the night before but this somewhat limits my options with regard to what I can eat. Currently the only thing I can think of is salmon and veg, tuna and veg, some form of chilli? Although I can eat away at chicken I find if I dont eat it straight after cooking it becomes very dry and not as pleasurable to eat.....not that I care but im going to want to wolf down this breakfast so it starts digesting ASAP.

Any ideas? I know Ollie trained early AM but it seems you could get away with a porridge brekky better than me

It's the previous days nutrtion that will play the biggest part, breakfast is just to get you going. Avoid too much fat as you won't get to digest it as you train, I'd just go for something simple like porridge and a protein shake or Chicken breast sandwich or similar.

Keep it light mate

For near enough 3 years I trained at 5:30 - 6am - only thing Id take was Whey and Coffee and take along with me a carb drink which Id take after each bodypart. Last thing you need is a heavy breakfast. If you want to have oats and all then make sure you give it a good 1.5 hours before training

Disagree with the fats...whack up 4 eggs fried in coconut oil, with some chopped toms and seasoning. I could make that in 5 mins, plus it won't bloat you and the tyrosine/vits in the eggs & the coconut oil should give you a bit of a boost.

Add a couple more eggs to that and have a shake on the side and you're golden. :)

I'd definately need some carbs in me before hitting the gym, couldn't do it on fats no way.

I always find i train best on an empty stomach in the morning. If you've got a decent circadian rhythm for sleeping/waking you should have bundles of energy on waking due to the cortisol spike. Combine that with some eph and double expresso and i'm raring to go. Have breakfast after.

Half an avocado, Half a cucumber, handfull of spinach, small piece of protein and a tablespoon of healthy oil washed down with a litre of water.

I find that if I'm training early its best to stay in fat burning mode instead of bursting out of it with carbs. You end up neither here nor there IMO

Save the carbs for after ;)

Coffee with milk and sugar, then train as it's what you eat the day before that counts. Then have a post workout shake

Good spot Karla. Come to think of it, whenever Chopper posts something about food, there's mention of cucumbers. Meh, I never rezlized you could eat them afterwards. :D

All I can manage is a whey and glutamine shake with a big mug of coffee with sugar. Then a whey shake straight after followed by some porridge when I get in about 20 mins later.

I tend to train first thing (6:30am) but allow myself an hour after eating. I seem to be fine on oats but never went mad on them first thing - 50g tops.

Can easily get 500kCal down my neck without any problems. I'm about to embark on a cut and breakfast will be 1/2 grapefruit, greens, and an omelette with 5 whites, 3 yolks and spinach, cooked in coconut oil.

pre soak some porridge in milk with some honey. several spoonfulls of that should keep you going...dont need loads.

a little whey in a minimum amount of water

if i had about 45 min from waking to lifting my first weight..then id have the breakfast of champions...

4-5 eggs
2 scoops oats
1 scoop whey
banana
3g creatine
dash of water
all blended up.

Sorry guys busy....sleepless times :(

Think I will definately try the eggs route as I seem to feel fine with protein/fats food early but dunno how close to training ive had that. I remember one instance I went soon after brekky and had the best session of my life....but unfortunately seemed to push it too hard too soon and was sick as a dog half way through my session, intensity sharply fell :(

Think you may be on to something with amounts, perhaps just get a little in me before and eat a horse or two after. Having to train nights currently as my housemates are drunken turds refusing to let me sleep, we also no longer have glass on our front door....bugger.
