Bands

Postby Rilla on Tue Apr 21, 2009 9:37 pm

I want to start using some bands primarily for added resistance on pressups and possibly dips (for doing circuits - much more convenient than plates+belt), I might use them for some more stuff later on if I like the way it feels.
Can anybody tell me how long bands I'd want for pressups and well as how much resistance they offer?
If anybody knows a good place to get some as well, I'd be well happy.

Pullum Sports are good.

I think you need the 41" bands for things like bench press. Maybe the short bands for pressups? Though if you order the long bands you could double loop em to make em shorted and up the resistance

Yea that's what I've ended up with as well after a night of abusing the internet at work. Getting the long ones and doubling them would be kind of silly as they would take up more space and just generally be a hassle.
I'm trying to find a place that's cheaper than Pullum, cause I find them quite expensive. From the States I can get two bands for the same price as one from Pullum (and two red bands for example would probably be all the resistance I'd ever need on pressups). Also, I've been wanting to get a couple of Steelstretch shirts, that Ironwoody stocks, maybe it's time to shop overseas. :D

Thanks for the endless replies guys. :)

I went out and ordered a set of #1-#4 from Absolute gold, and they're just perfect. For pressups the length is spot on. So far I've only played with the #1 a bit and it offers good resistance without being overpowering. Pretty sure I could still manage 20+. The bands seem very sturdy and durable.
Delivery was swift and so was communication (you have to place international orders manually). I ended up paying about 60£ for the set of 4 bands, which isn't too bad I think.

what size/length did you go for? 20" or 41"?

This is a good post: http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_for ... oody_bands

The 41".
I've read the article on T-nation, but didn't get that much help for my specific purpose. Also, the bands I got are quite a bit cheaper than Woody bands.

If you find them too long for specific exercises - I find them too long for doing squats - Just tie a knot in 'em at the required length - An easy to untie one though! - Works for me

Why get the Jump Stretch ones? Do they offer anything that Woody/Gold bands don't offer?

cos I'm getting them at trade price from a company I use. That's what they use. I'm not bothered either way tbh. I'm sure they all work as well as each other.

Ok, that makes sense Scott, you can probably get them through your own company which makes them deductable too etc. From what I've seen there's a big price difference, though it's quite a different situation for you.
Tried all of them now.
Can do pressups with all four bands - because of the length, the resistance only really kicks in around halfway through the movement. The #4 sure does add a bit of gravity. They seem like a very convenient option for dips too. Will start thinking of new ways to punish myself using these. Fun times!
I really like the way they add resistance. It's fun. Feels like you get free muscles from your training! :D

Yeh luckily i avoided customs. Haven't been so lucky in the past though. Will you be using the bands on any of the bigger movements like squats, bench etc?
Edit - Sorry got yourself and Rab confused, as rab is strength training so he might use them on squats/bench etc.
Question still stands though..

CONFUSED ME WITH RAB?!?! If I were you I'd watch my back. :DI am doing strength training of sorts - at least my training is strength based, but more so functional strength than powerlifting strength. As you can see from my journal I do more or less compounds only etc.
Will use the bands mostly for pressups for now, but can also see myself using them on dips, deads, pullups and basically anything I can think of. :)
I only have single bands though, so I'm not sure how to apply to squatting. For deads I can just loop it around the bar and under my feet, then pull away. :D

Using a single band for a squat would be 'tight' - If you're in a squat rack, you could loop it round the bar and a 2nd low set of pins :?:
