Back pumps and back pain.

Postby Marks1972 on Wed Jul 09, 2008 2:54 pm

Would you guys say there is a way to recognise if lower back pain is pumps or an injury?

I have this thought every time i get bad pumps from squatting or deadlifting.

Im sure my form is ok, if anything its a little over protective and probably costs me a few KGs as my mind is on the position of my back/chest/shoulders more than anything and i see an osteopath periodically as a precaution so im happy that ive not hurt my back, but i was wondering IF a back injury occured is it clearly different from back pumps.

I think it can be difficult to make a distinction between the two when you are training, unless it's a really bad pain.

If your back is hurting you outside of the gym, then it's more than likely not just pump.
This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill, fifteen percent concentrated power of will. Five percent pleasure and fifty percent pain.

Back pumps so bad that you can't stand after a session? Or real distinguishable pain?

By the time im out of the gym and ive done a couple of exercises that give my back the chance to 'de-pump' its fine and i get no back pain outside the gym, but sometimes when its painful and i push on saying to myself 'man up, its just back pumps' it worries me that if it was a proper injury pushing on could be a big mistake.

speaking from my experiance this week. back pump is just that a tightness . Back pain is a lot more painfull and its a different pain. I think you just know when the good pain stops and the bad pain starts.
The heat/ibroprofen works well. I also used cold spray last nigh and radian b muscle rub is also good at keeping the are warm and loose

The physios may correct me , but in my experience any flaw in your form can cause a tiny injury that just gets worse and worse over time until it becomes a real problem.

Hve your back checked out by a chiro /physio . For £25 its well worth it
