Activated Barley

Postby health4ni on Thu Jun 18, 2009 1:41 pm

Does anyone use this?

Any opinions on it?

I like the fact that it is made from pre-sprouted barley. This would suggest it's alkaline.

Also, I'm beginning to wonder just whether fast acting carbs, and indeed protein, is really that necessary. Thus, this stuff is very slow acting but I don't think that this will matter.

Post workout nutrition is probably more important for sports people such as rugby players as opposed to gym rats as it's highly unlikely that the average gym dweller has expended anywhere near the amount of effort or expended close to the energy of a competitive sports person and I have not used a fast acting carb for the past two years outside of playing rugby.

The same is true to protein, although TBH it's just habit to have a shake post workout, although I now take BSD BCAA tabs with me and take some during training and sometimes forget an immediate PWO shake.

Lee Priest said that it's what you eat the day before you train that counts and the day after and I think he's probably right for most weekend warriors, although as I said at the outset fast carbs for sport are a must.

Ok, so I think your reply means you're not in favour of it since it's not a fast carb.

I agree with your comment about most people how go to the gym don't need carbs post-workout. Most do not work with anywhere near the intensity levels they need to. Full stop.

I just eat a solid meal PWO (about an hour or so after), makes no difference to a PWO shake IME.

As for the activated barley its so expensive I'd expect few have used it!

Not post workout, but an hour before seems sensible as you'll get the benefit during and after the session.

The post workout drink thing (in respect of carbs and glycogen replenishment) is a pretty complex equation - training intensity, duration and frequency all being relevant to determining its importance, as well as diet what other exercise you do beyond training. Whether you are cutting or bulking is also another fairly major part of the equation... hard to generalise, but you are right that not that many will be training hard and frequently enough to gain much of an advantage from it.

On topic of activated barley, it's a good one with a good profile and something i'd probably have already tried (being carb friendly ;) ) if it was a bit cheaper.
