12 weeks as of tomorrow

Postby the_cheshirecat on Sun Mar 22, 2009 8:37 am

Now that I have started doing things seriously, I can start writing a "real" journal with my first workout ike Master Yoda says(*).
So, here it goes:
legs only session, for some unknown reason (probably not enough fats in my diet, but considering that I am eating all the right stuff it's a tad weird!) my hands are literally splitting open...
Leg press:
100 kg x14
150 kg x7 x7 x14
Master Yoda thought it funny to make me believe that I was pressing much less, after finishing, when I found out how much he had made me make I lost all strenght in my legs(*).

Bulgarian split squats:
bw x6 x6 x6
BIG issues here, my legs were traumatizes after learning that they had worked with 3 figures weights, and because I have "short tiny legs" (*) I really struggled to find the right position.

Leg extentions:
5 kg x10 x10 x10 x10
By now my legs were fried, I had also nearly tipped over trying to find a suitable position.
According to Master Yoda he had never seen anybody being that awkward before (*).

Romanian DL:
13.8 kg x10 x10
18.3 kg x10 x10
I asked to increase the weight because I could barely feel it.
I am turning into an alien creature...

Standing calf rise:
10 kg x10
20 kg x10
30 kg x10
I thought 30 kg was too much for me, but I was wrong.
Actually, when I get a pair of trainers that won't allow me to slowly slip off until I am basically grabbing the corner with my toes, I should be able to do much more.

Seated calf rise:
15 kg x15 x15 x15
Problems finding the right position here too.
I believe that shiny gyms are made for women, serious gyms have equipment that is suitable for men only.
By the end of the session I was really starting to believe that I might have "tiny short legs" (*).

I had problems going up the stairs at home, but it seems I have no permanent damage (at the moment!), aside from a bit of soreness where I pulled all the muscles in my front left thigh when I was tipping over.
Apparently this will lead to harsher training, because this one was too easy.
If I have to call off sick when we do the upper body I will really start putting small amounts of real flour in Master Yoda's brownies.

(*) He'll pay dearly for that....

good stuff. Your leg press is very good. Master Yoda must have used the force on you :?

That's a brilliant session. Are you adding fish oil into your diet? When I first started taking it my hands dried right up and I got silly numbers of skin splits. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise, it gets better.

 It'd funny you said that: Master Yoda has decided it wasn't that much.
Why? Probably because I was still able to walk this morning (but I have REAL problems going up and down the stairs...)!

:? I thought that adding EPA and stuff should make skin better, and not make it fall apart?
I actually have REAL problems with uncooked fats, I hate them, and cannot digest them at all.
I will moisturize, but it's a tad difficult when my hands are at work for most of the day!
Maybe I will use raw oil to do it, it works wonders on nails, and I will actually be able to say that I USE UNCOOKED OILS!

Master Yoda is correct, if you can still walk unaided after legs, you didnt give it 110% :D

Only kidding, awesome sesh, 150kg leg press is impressive.

As far as feet slipping when doing calf raises, ive always had this problem, ive tried nike running shoes, all stars, Ironworks, bare foot, nothing works, i always start slipping, i just reset my footing about half way through the intended set now, but tis annoying, if you crack it, let me know.

I thought 150kg for 14 was a good first effort, ROM is seriously reduced though when you have short legs and huge boobs, but still its a great base to work from.

The most impressive thing is that I am pretty sure I have more than that in my legs: I did 3 years and some figure skating as a kid, and apparently they are still there, well hidden but there...

I think that wearing old Superga didn't help, but I have this feeling that I might be in your same situation.

Pups & work kept me too busy to write, but of course Master Yoda wouldn't allow me to miss a session!

TUESDAY (upper body)
My legs were DOMS ridden enough to make me look like Gollum when I had to go downstairs at work.
The boys showed no mercy, I will save you the comments that they didn't spare to me.
The sheer thought of doing cardio was enough to send me crawling in my corner, so in a bout of self-destruction I decided that maybe killing my upper body too would be a good idea, and distract me from my legs.
I guess that even Master Yoda can show some pity from time to time, I haven't been in agony this time, and my upper body is soooooo weak!

Incline bench:
7.5 kg x8 x10 x10 x10

Incline flies:
8 lbs x10 x10 x10

Chest supported Rows (I think... and then it's MY handwriting that is illegible, uh?):
7.5 x10 x10 x10

Straight arm pulldowns:
18 x6 x6 x6 x6

Master Yoda was actually surprised by the fact that each exercise pulled in the wrong places, this one specially!
Apparently I have done loads of weird work when at work, reinforcing some groups and leaving other wither and die...

Thursday:
Cardio only session, + hamstring curls I couldn't do during the
first serious training session
(*).
I have to say that the cardio is becoming real boring now, I definitely must find something to focus on.
Or throw some newer music in my ipod.

Saturday (legs session):
I felt very masochistic, after a week stuck at work for 10 hours a day, and the perspective of a very similar week next week, so I took it on my legs.
To make things more complicated, I decided to leave the leg press last.
Big mistake.

Ham curl:
30 kg x10 x10
35 kg x10

Standing calf rise:
40 x10
? (I believe it might have been 80) kg x 10
110 kg x10 (I nearly collapsed laughing when I saw the weight!) x 10
100 (I think) kg x 8
? (anything between 80 and 40) kg x 10

My feet keep slipping off, adding weight made them a tad more stable, but still...
the x8 series was due to the fact that I was basically grabbing the corner with my toes to avoid falling.
I MUST find a solution!

Seated calf rise:
15 kg x20 x20 x20 x20
Same as above.
Any hint is VERY welcome!

Legs extensions:
10 kg x10 x10 x10 x10

Bulgarian split:
bw x6 x6 x8
The bloody thing seems to be really draining my legs, they went really weak after this.

Romanian deadlift:
18.3 kg x10 x10 x10
24.2 kg x10
Master Yoda is REALLY hilarious: when I asked him what was the next heavier weight he told me it would be only 2 kg heavier.
NEVER trust this man on such things...

Leg press:
100 kg x 10 x 10 x 10
150 kg x3
I failed the 150 kg to start with, they literally refused to move, and when I tried again I failed after 3 reps.
Extremely frustrating.

I am now waiting to see how I'll feel at work, considering that I must be all over the place next week: we're having a big audit, and if things go bad they'll kill the scapegoat.
The scapegoat (aka ME) would rather stay alive and employed, so if you know of any mojos your contribution will be appreciated!

Don't worry, from Sunday night onwards DOMS crippled me bigtime.
After all, what's the point in being unable to walk if you're not working?
It's so much more fun hen you MUST move at work LOL!

What's the idea behind the calf exercises?

(that reads badly, like I'm aggressively asking, but it's not like that at all; can't think of any other way to ask lol).

Trying to find a weight that works on the standing calf raises, Charlotte needs better shoes for it, the seated tend to work better with higher reps anyway, so that all good.

It will end up as 4-5 sets on the standing raise (lower reps 6-10) and the 3-4 sets on the seated (higher reps 15-20).

Well when you do a back exersize and you feel in mainly in your triceps what do you expect me to say.

Ok. But I mean why have calf exercises in the routine? What's the reason for them?

To develop the calf muscle, not a big fan of huge calf on a woman but if you can get away with adding some then its all muscle which will increase the metabolism.

Initially Chrlotte told me her calfs where big but after losing somewhere between 1 1/2 and 2 stones we're getting a clearer picture of what needs to be done.

Ok, sure I know what calf exercises do lol

I very rarely get clients doing calf exercises. I personally think time could be spent better on exercises that utilise larger muscle groups to aid body composition and strength and fat loss. Like sprints would be a good one (if appropriate for the_cheshirecat) of course).

For body builders there is obviously a reason.

I just wondered if there was any other reason that' all.

Sounds like things are going well with a 1.5-2 stone weight loss though 8-)
